Start program in notification area only?

I have been using BOINC with MAC and recently also installed on Windows 8.1 machine. Under Win 8.1 the program starts up running in a window on the desktop. I would prefer it to only open in the notification area, saving me having to close the manager down after every boot. I have done some searches but can only find assistance with this problem for older versions of Windows.
