THKS to every body answering abt the 7.2.47 version, not for Mac OSX ok thks no problem. I missed your post about the version. The official supported version from us for Mac OSX and Linux 7.2.42. The reason Windows is 7.2.47 is there was a bug in the screen saver code for Windows, thus it was promoted a few version numbers. Thanks, -Uplinger |

Apis, The upgrade path is very simple, just download and install over the top of the previous version. It should prompt you to reboot after the install is complete. Once that is done, you will be running the latest version of the agent. The work units do not need to be completed, they will restart from checkpoint after reboot. Thanks, -Uplinger also, if we have used x64 app in Win7...meaning that the app was in :\Program Files\BOINC... and to update to 32bit app in Win7...meaning that it would go into :\Program Files (x86)\BOINC directory... does that mena we can just install x86 app over the x64? Our support path is for an upgrade from the previous version of the client we recommended. Thus a 32 bit to a 32 bit. I have tried changing the installation directory to install a 32 bit version over the top of the 64 bit version. Thanks, -Uplinger |

OK, so I'm now running 7.2.47 instead of the old 6.10.58. I've generally got used to the visible differences (especially the log in a different window) and have not been phased by them. However, today I got my first retread WU (that I noticed) and was surprised that it didn't pre-empt the other WUs and start straight away. I've read the FAQs and tried following Sekerob's advice to help me change settings, but nothing has made that retread start.
Would someone who has successfully got Earliest Deadline First and pre-emption to work with this version please help me to understand what I need to do? Thanks! |

Haven't seen any issues reported re scheduling order of resends/repairs (retreads?).
----------------------------------------Asking the obvious - the WU you're referring to is a "genuine" resend/repair resulting from a wingman "error" or "pending verification" and not from "Detached" which although it initiates a resend does not attract the shorter deadline of a "genuine" repair/resend? [edit] I have seen "detached" appearing more frequently in the last week.10 days. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by jonnieb-uk at Mar 29, 2014 12:53:41 PM] |

I didn't bother to check WHY but, yes, it has the shorter lead-time alright (about 3.5 days).
If you successfully get pre-empting by short deadline tasks, could you please tell me what values you use for:
Thanks! |

Mine do NOT pre-empt immediately, necessarily, just wait and see what occurs

Also found: SekeRob "strike the "Switch between applications every..." part. It does nothing in ver7.xx either to force short deadline tasks ahead, even when upped to 6000 minutes. " I've only had 2 MCM1 repair/resends in recent weeks and, as you have found, they didn't jump to the head of the queue. Since I tend to micro-manage it wasn't an issue. Without SekeRob's input we'll only make progress on this issue if it's picked up by the techs. ![]() |

The trick of setting 'switch between applications every' to a high value in BOINC V6.10.58 used to ensure short deadline work units (re-sends and beta) were run immediately. This stopped working with the version 7 scheduler. There was a discussion at the time in these forums but no way of tricking the scheduler was found.

I have many retreads and yes, they do not start immediately, but they do eventually pre-empt the running units and start if necessary to complete before the deadline. There must be a calculation in BOINC which decides when the time is growing near for their completion. So far they have all started and completed before the deadline even if they just started when their turn came in the queue. Cheers
