all that time i spent learning how to write is now wasted ! Handwriting is not dead. It is still important to be able to write, by hand, in cursive, even though some schools are discounting this. The medium of pencil and/or pen to paper is still extensively used to clearly communicate ideas and information. Rather than just dashing off something by texting a person, it takes thought to write them. I have experience with students in 6th,7th, and 8th grades who do not like to read cursive, but they are fully capable of doing so. Their skills with pencil and paper are not necessarily good, but if you do not use and practice a skill it will, of course, not be very good. Since requiring work to be legible, the students make the effort and do get better although for some there are some lessons learned that if their work is unreadable, they get no credit. Cheers

An interesting thought. Although I agree with you that texting and typing are more prevalent now due to technology I don't think handwriting will go away anytime soon.
----------------------------------------I can't explain it, but I always prefer to take notes using pen and paper (for some reason it gets stuck in my head better than using my laptop and notepad), and when I could I would always like to read a paper copy of a book, although I do realize that making a paperback or hardcover is not that great for the environment. But it would be interesting to see how this develops in the future. Who knows maybe there will be one day where we won't "write" anything anymore if its not on a phone screen or a computer screen. ![]() ![]() |

It will be interesting if the kids of today don't develop that curvature of the middle finger from gripping pencil and pen. Anthropologist viewing our Skeletons in years to come might have a puzzle to solve.
----------------------------------------Handwriting will never die though Quickest way to make notes, lists and capturing thoughts. Letters will always be special handwritten I worry most about loss of vocabulary with the BTW's and GR8's When OK (already abbreviated) is shortened to k I think we have a problem waiting in our futures Orwell was right but the way he expected it to turn out has happened under the guise of "that's useful" and we have willingly accepted our every movement tracked and our language diminished. Google now lets me know who I have just called from their telephone number (and I never told the phone) and tells me I'm 21 mins from home and can be expected to be delayed by 2 mins - that's brilliant but insidious at the same time. More recycling of paper and industry from well managed forests will do better for environment as well as moving paper magazines to the internet.
----------------------------------------A paper copy of a book can be read everywhere without spoiling energy -u cud even read at candle light ! i see more teenagers more sensible to handwritten letters from their sweet-hearts than coded textos. I think lovers will always have letters to read or burn. I am a old romantic for sure By the way what will happen with graphology in the future? is it still used ? by police or employers ?? ![]() |

I guess we can all agree that technology is a double edged sword, there are both benefits like alged said and some downsides to it like David Autums mentioned.
