According to the SNURK sig below, I'm on 431 Gflops, the question is can I crack the 500 Gflops mark and how long will it take to do it.
How much additional crunching power will I have to add to acheive this milestone? |

My Snurky sig is with 3 INTEL duallies plus a single used for other stuff too. For a total of 666Gflops
----------------------------------------Hint: Try a modern Intel rig (they are devilishly good) ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by OldChap at Feb 22, 2014 11:58:29 PM] |

The E5 and the E5 v2 generation should be your target Mama.
----------------------------------------When I first ran the rig with 2 * 8c/16t @2.4 I measured it at around 240 watts crunching MCM1. It does NOT run headless. As is always the case this will be out of date and inefficient in a couple of years relative to what is available then but if you can fund such a build it will give you more points for less electricity. ![]() |

The Westmere processors are good, no doubt. I have a pair of 5670's myself. Had another dually of 5650's but sold that. The E5 v2 are very power efficient compared to earlier xeons. Unfortunately they are priced out of most folks reach. Going for high Gflops is a great milestone but just crunching for cures on anything regardless of power is just awesome.
----------------------------------------Good luck on hitting 500. Wish I had the funds and time to do that.
Crunching for humanity since 2007!

Many thanks OC & Bearcat...
Ok so here's the plan. 1. Clear out old 8 core single and dual processor machines (save the money) 2. Add the idle machines to this account and get them crunching 24/7 3. Move more machines to this account that currently crunch other projects 4. Target 600 Gflops, 500 is too easy? (after all I'm nearly there & I do like a challenge!) 5. Later in the year look at refreshing the fleet of machines to more efficient better machines/processors (I'll post some options then for guidance 6. Target 750 Gflops! Now, that sounds like a plan! |
