Re: What's going to be my next project?

Mmmmm... interesting, I would be interested in the power figures/comparison...

I've just discovered something strange and intriguing...

Having just commissioned my latest machine, a 2p/4c/8th - 16th total, @ 3.3 it is currently out performing ALL my 2.67 2p/6c/12th - 24th total by a long way!

OK the latter are Xeon x5650's at 85w & the former are w5590's as mentioned at 3.3, so the power consumption is much higher, but the output is much higher too!

I'll monitor for a while and get some PPW data...

Interesting...

The trouble is that, because the points system is such a cluster f**k, it is almost impossible to gauge the performance of new machines until they have been running for about 3 months.

see the daily output of rig running for ages:

http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=host&proj=bwcg&hostid=2418906

another:

http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=host&proj=bwcg&hostid=2743427

The range is something like 8 to 80 points per hour at the whim of the system. therefore averages are the best you can hope for (on FA@H at least)

I think that after I hit 50 years I will go over to MCM1 for a while and points be damned.

Old Chap,
You are right about the inconsistency of the points awarded, especially for the Vina units of FAAH. According to my WCGDAWS figures from Piroque, the PPH(points per Hour) on my rig with Xeon e5410's varies from 25 to a high of 95. That is the greatest variability in points awarded I have seen on any project.
Cheers

The rig running @ 2.4 is pulling 240w from the wall. it uses a platinum psu

The rig running @ 3.1 is pulling 285w from the wall. it uses a gold psu

both rigs running FA@H

Sorry for the delay in getting this info posted

Thanks OC, I've been really busy of late, so not much time to 'play' with systems to get power/points stats. When things quieten down a bit I see if I can get on it...

This may be green enough. A quad-core at 2.05 GHZ, integrated GPU and a TDP of 25 watts. AM1 socket (haven't seen any motherboards for sale yet, only announcements). £39.99

Whilst it wopuld be 'green' it is likely to be of limited use for crunching. The low speed rating and the low core count will mean running several to get the same output as one machine with more cores or higher speed.

It just seems like going backwards! slowing the processor to reduce the power usage, is ok but for crunching you have to balance the output with the power usage. From many discussions, the more threads the better the machine will perform, however, if the speed of the processor is too low, all those cores are still not going to give you a good return for the power they use...

This is, of course, my humble opinion...

FLOP calculated 1869.59 million ops/sec
Measured integer speed 3868.09 million ops/seg

FLOP calculated 1929.68 million ops/seg
Measured integer speed 4047.22 million ops/seg

Those Athlon's 5350 seem to have pretty great integer and floating point figures.
Considering these APU's are very cheap and use around 35 watts per hour under full CPU load (the whole machine uses 35 watts).
I read somewhere that they can actually run BF4 at 10 fps cool
And with Linux 64 bits, even better for WCG.

But seriously, considering their cost, power usage and output, I think that these are a good choice for anyone wanting a green farm. Plus, AMD is going to announce a new product on April 29th which may be the Kabini successor, Beema, which is supposed to bring 250% faster graphics and 15-25% better CPU performance at a TDP of 15 watts. Hope these also get a socketed version.

The best APU has a 15 watt TDP and 2.4 GHZ clock. Plus it is faster than the previous ones.
