What's going to be my next project?

A genuine question...

I really don't know what I'm going to do next, I'm looking for some ideas.

Sensible
Crazy
Challenging
Daft (could do with a laugh!)

Is there something you wanted to try, but never got round to it?

Let's see what you guys can come up with...

Create a green crunching machine? One that uses as little power as possible for as much performance possible?

- AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W

Or just paint a case green!

Now there's a thought!

There are several ways to achieve this
1 - Connect a PC to Solar or other 'Free' energy source
2 - Search for and find the lowest rated energy usage components
3 - Employ a whole army of Hamsters in wheels connected to generators to generate the power required
4 - Loads of other ways...

I think 3 is a non-starter as animal rights would say its cruel, even though no-one would force the hamsters into the wheels!

2 - Could take a lot if time and effort, however, this is the most likely to be successful

1 - not really meeting the criterion

Other ideas would be appreciated to make this work...

Additional ideas for the next project are still sort...

Re: What's going to be my next project?

This very small PC only uses on average 18 watts, with a dual core 3.3 processor, it may not be the greatest in terms of output, but it does not use much power!

Haha, 1 is definitely hard in the UK!
And yeah, 3 wouldn't be very humane on the eyes of people like me. Good joke tought!

2 is probably the way to go!

Does anyone crunch on a Raspberry Pi?

Are they still about?

Re: What's going to be my next project?

Am hoping AMD's new server chips based on arm come out soon. 8 cores and low wattage. Since they are 64 bit, was hoping dual or quad socket would be available when launched this spring.
See if you can find any multi socket arm boards.

If that is right, samples of the AMD ARM Server CPU will be distributed starting March but will only be available in Q4 2014, unless I misunderstood.

They sound almost too good to be true!

Let's see what the early tests return. The performance may will have a bearing on how they do as it's one thing to reduce the power consumption, but if they don't do what is required, then, they are not much good. I think only time will tell...

We are seeing a drive to more and more power effiient systems, with the power consumption/TDP being significiantly reduced. The Ghz rating is what appears to be the key, within another thread on here several of us concluded that overclocking increased performance and power usage, however, the increase was not proportionatly represented in the output. Thus, stock Ghz rating was best for 24/7 crunching...
