Re: Windows 9

Well it's provoked a response biggrin

My take on Windows 8 is.... If you are going to have to learn how to use all over again you might as well invest that time on something new i.e. Android or a flavour of Unbuntu (et al)

Windows 8 threw the baby out with the bath water. Personally I loath it. I type this on one of my 2 W7 Machines that suits me just fine.

My works provided moby is Windows. It's so bad I just call forward it to a new Android Moby I pay for myself - now there's a recommendation for you. When the Nokia Drive Sat Nav took me back to the same junction on the A1 after 10 miles of driving enough was enough.

Windows 8.1 promised the good old Start Button. When it didn't deliver that was the end of 8 for me.

Liking the love for Open Office/Libre Office - you don't have to go Linux to use it

Windows 9 - Windows 7 packed with programs (Like for example Word etc) ditch the permanent hook into the former Hotmail and add the capability for Touch Screen when applicable. Get back to programs installing like programs with downloads like downloads. Oh and return scrolling to ..... down

And then add this touch of Windows 95 genius = the expanding tree of the start button that we all know and love biggrin

Any more for any more?

Windows 9 will launch mid 2015 where do you think we will have got to by then ?

Dave

Re: Windows 9

Instead of quoting everyone who replied to my post, let me just say....

Touchscreen tablets have been in use with businesses for a longer time than the consumer tablet market. The way they usually work is having your basic Windows setup (like XP or W7) and the icons are "clickable" with your finger. That is basically the way all tablets work today also, whether its an Android or Apple iPad (neither of which are Windows products, and the icons are called "apps").

Microsoft was trying something different with the tiles, but I think its safe to say the majority does not prefer tiles over icons or apps. I don't see why Microsoft couldn't just make a Windows operating system that is more like classic Windows with clickable icons, so that it can be used with either desktops, touchscreen laptops, and a more basic version for tablets.

Because that would make too much sense.

That and Ballmer wanted to outdo Apple at their own game.

Re: Windows 9

I hadn't given Bill any cash since 2001, but with the imminent demise of XP I grabbed a cheap upgrade to W8... and was disappointed, W8 made Canonical`s Unity look positively futuristic and useable.
W8.1 has been a definite improvement, boot straight to desktop, plus 'show desktop apps first' in metro without big fluoro tiles is good.
Dave, if you want "the expanding tree of the start button " as seen in '95 install Classic Shell I have and it works great! biggrin

So after some tweaking and waiting and fiddling I now have a nice standby OS riddled with NSA backdoors and DRM infested bloatware, ready and waiting to field any curve balls the IT world throws my way.
In the mean time, I shall continue to work and play sans Bill with all of my other devices, softwares, hardwares, applications and virtual machines.

Where will we be 2015? I'll be be watching Star Wars from here: telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl

Have alot of fun clown

Re: Windows 9

An OS or application is simply a tool. When you take something that works efficient and well (Win7 or XP) and replace it with something that makes your tasks longer (Windows 8) you have to expect a backlash. I consider myself an early adopter, and I did test out Windows 8 in a VM prior to release. In my opinion it is only usable on a tablet for basic tasks. After that experience, I actually bought a full retail copy of Win7 for my future workstations, which is still sitting shrink wrapped on a shelf.

What I would like to see is a return to Windows 7 with the cascading start menu, and incremental improvements for hardware, security, etc. The UI has already been refined over the years and does not need major changes. If MS wants to have the same OS on tablets and desktops (remember XP tablet edition) then the UI should swap back and forth when you dock the device. At this time Apple seems to have it right with separate operating systems for the desktop/laptop and tablet.

I built my desktop in January, 2013 and I actually ordered Windows 7 on THE DAY Windows 8 came out! biggrin I think Microsoft has pretty much perfected Windows with W7. Then again after 20+ years and several editions they should have. If I can build a 2nd desktop for crunching I will just use Ubuntu though.
