I installed Boinc 7.0.64 on my new Windows 8 laptop and it began to run so slowly that I had to uninstall Boinc. The lap-top then ran at normal speed. That is why I am no longer returning results to World Community Grid.

Hi Jessica,
The reason your laptop runs slower with BOINC is that the laptop CPU responds to system temperature. E.g. if you set BOINC to run at 50% of CPU time, the client will run slower, which makes the CPU run faster again. You can influence this also in W8 by changing the power profile from e.g. balanced or power saving to performance, but if too technical, just let that be. Maybe if you set BOINC to 50% of CPU time and 50% of processors, BOINC will run slow enough for your laptop remain fast. If you're willing to try, we're here to help you. Talk to you later. |

Thank you Rob,
I have done as you suggested (changed the power settings and from 60% CPU to 50%), and, so far, everything seems to be working at full speed .. thank you! Should have come here before uninstalling in the first place! Smiles, Jess |

Jess, you're welcome.
In the next few months there will be a new WCG endorsed client coming. 7.0.64 is good, but whence WCG recommends 7.2.xx, it will do a much smoother client throttling... not at whole second intervals [which is what 50% achieves and gives best balance and no or little cooler fan revving], but at one-tenth of a second precision, so 50% would work as a 0.5 second pause, 0.5 second run. Much much better in multiple respects. Till then, crunch on. |
