Hi:
I was thinking of how WCG could harness more of the computing power that is available and is underutilized. One big entity I thought of was Google and their large data centers that must employ up-to-date CPUs that are running 24/7. I did a search of WCG partners and I was surprised to learn that Google is not on that list of partners. Data centers with their high powered computers could really be a big kick and be able to really speed up the completion of projects. And what about post secondary institutions with their networked workstations that are usually being run 24/7? How about a WCG partner promotion drive? |

Hello cehunt,
I may misremember, but I think that a long time ago Google was considering promoting WCG. Although I never heard the details, I imagine it was just a few people flying a kite in the halls of Google. Putting on my business hat, I don't see anything that Google would gain. Let WCG promote itself. Google can always use any spare cycles sieving its archives for more data. Lawrence |

What would Google gain??
The same what I gain by donating my CPU time to various projects. Right now I have earned almost 11 MILLION points just on the Clean Energy project because I believe in the project. Mankind has to wean itself off using fossil fuels to generate energy. I have read that Google uses solar panels to generate power from the sun. Donating their CPU cycles will show they practise what they preach and being a good corporate citizen. As the old saying goes, you are either part of the solution or you are part of the problem. Google are experts in their field. I can only imagine that all of their working servers and desktop are used for distributed work that they submit as that is the nature of their work. This includes using distcc for compiling as they do a lot of that too. Their "spare" CPU cycles will be used to reduce their work times, if they have any sense. They do, after all, use Ubuntu.
Not only this but the additional cost to Google should they have all their CPUs running at 100% would run in the millions. They can justify the cost to shareholders if that money is due to the cost of their own work. |

Funny thing in the cloud, a study found that 60% of the traffic was reordering/relocating data. Like Amazon has it's EC2, I'd not be surprised if Google sold processing time.
