Windows/Non Windows BOINC Agent Support

Rob et al, is there any mileage in splitting the current forum into Windows and non-Windows? wink

Re: Windows/Non Windows BOINC Agent Support

The BOINC Support forum, or any other forum: No. You will just see even more duplicate threads on same issue. If posters who create OPs would be complete in base information [what science, what OS(ses), general, particular platform, message/result log, symptoms], it would help to shorten support paths.

Re: Windows/Non Windows BOINC Agent Support

Two alternative, though complementary, suggestions:

1. Amend the Description for BOINC Agent Support in the Forum Index
Currently
For members to post questions and answers related to installing and running the BOINC agent. Any information that is wrong, misleading, or offensive can be removed by the Forum Administrator. Posts that go off-topic can be closed by the Forum Administrator.
is repetitive of what should be standard policy throughout the forum and wastes space. Replace it with a clear indication of the minimum information required in any post in this thread to help solve a problem. as outlined in Rob's post above.

Since most(?) users won't bother to read it

2. Create and Post a sticky thread at the head of the BOINC Agent Support stating, again, the minimum information required in any post in this thread to help solve a problem.

Users probably won't read that either, but it could easily be referenced by whoever responds to a post where the required information is not provided.

Re: Windows/Non Windows BOINC Agent Support

Is it possible to provide a template in the 'quick reply to post' section for contributors to complete for OS, OS version, BOINC client version?

Re: Windows/Non Windows BOINC Agent Support

Now 'That' is an excellent Idea. Make the forum index intro texts more specific with support 'how to get fastest help' outline.

techs/admins: please digest long and carefully.

BTW, the stickied Start Here FAQ index [over all forums] has in section 4 a checklist: "Before asking for help...", suggestions on improving those [without turning it into a volume 1 book] is welcome.

But a majority of OP don't even look to see if there is an existing thread, never mind to see if the FAQ have the answer.

Agreed. Quite frankly the FAQ are a virtually impenetrable maze where even an experienced cruncher can have problems finding an answer even with some idea of what to look for. sad

Nevertheless if the standard information required for problem solving suggested by Rob - Platform, BOINC Version, OS etc etc - were detailed in a sticky thread, it would be a valuable tool to be referenced by the person first responding to query.
