Re: Mapping Cancer Markers - Problems Thread

I have on resent Beta 7.24 running for a very long time. Posting it here, because it should be the same version as current MCM1 public application.

BETA_ BETA_ 9999961_ 0096_ 2-- - In Progress 11/9/13 13:29:41 11/11/13 13:29:41 0.00 0.0 / 0.0 <<moi

CPU time is now 21.45 h. Progress 73.520 %, last checkpoint 19 hours ago. I think this is also how long the progress bar hasn't moved. The CPU time is counting up, which was not the case in the 7.21 Beta Windows error. I'm going to let it run for now.

Specs: Linux Lubuntu 64-bit, 7.0.27 64-bit client, processor: 2 AuthenticAMD AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-53 [Family 15 Model 104 Stepping 1]. Other MCM1 Betas took 7-9 hours on this notebook.

Re: Mapping Cancer Markers - Problems Thread

For those going all woozy over very long tasks, my wingman did over 20 hours on just 1 pass, and my copy is now running nearly 14 hours... and I sure will just let it run, at 99.797% efficiency and an assumed 96.238% completion...

Those feeling the urge to abort, BEFORE aborting visit the proper slot [select task, hit properties tells which slot], then take a copy of the stderr.txt. Logs that come from an abort have lots missing, and include that MS file dump, which is just the result of the abort.

And for those unhappy about this and feel critiquing is in order, think of how unhappy the techs, devs and scientists are with not having control over how long a mapping segment/computing pass takes. If it were predictable, they doubtlessly would take lots of effort to point those to the 24/7 powerhouses, or run them on a private grid, or make them go to opt-in to opt-in.

Till then, crunch on like there's no tomorrow [actually, humanity is working hard on arranging that]

edit: Task completed, log identical and interesting, BOINCTasks logged about 88 checkpoints [not printed in the Result Log], though there was one completed pass only. Just wonder how many were packed in the original and if there were more, assuming these are submitted later. Alternate, maybe it's pulling the passes from that 32MB txt file and just has an internal switch to end when a task has done enough?

Re: Mapping Cancer Markers - Problems Thread

Rob, the one I had just now was not just running forever, it had stopped incrementing CPU time. With 11+ hours elapsed and 4 run, it's pretty certain the horse was dead.

Not too worried about it as I figure those few will get sorted out soon enough.

This project does appear to be affecting FAAH autodock units though. Since they released I've had many autodocks do the same thing with freezing across multiple systems. Only thing that is different is a slightly unreliable internet.

I do not know what OS you are using, but this problem with the FAAH autodock application has plagued me for quite some time, prior to MIM1. It has occurred on both 32 and 64 bit Linux, but never on Windows. Normally suspending and then resuming the unit fixes the problem. When stuck the time running continues to increment, but the percentage done is stuck and the time remaining eventually becomes blank. It does not affect all autodock units, but occurs randomly. It has never occurred with a vina unit. Task manager will also show the core affected has dropped to a utilization rate of zero. Not a game changer, but annoying.
Cheers

"Normally suspending and then resuming the unit fixes the problem.", with LAIM off I presume.

Aside from AutoDock being a crawler [compared to VINA], the connection of AutoDock and HPF2 existed for me and the infamous 'hangs' for HPF2, always on Windows, never on Linux. Wonder if one day BOINC will add a wrapper feature that restarts a science task [tech only definable settings], back to last checkpoint under more than just heartbeat conditions. There's an overall time-out multiplicator, but that is equal to task death and 'Error' rating.

BTW, BOINCTasks has an alert 'highlight' feature with user definable thresholds at host and project level. There used to be a [Rosetta something] utility that actually popped up or reset a stuck application, but the developer pulled it from the web [still have a copy somewhere... ah yes RosettaView... it worked for WCG too, last updated in 2008]. Tasks resetting to last good checkpoint by themselves rather then being shot down has most everyone's favor I'd venture.

Re: Mapping Cancer Markers - Problems Thread

No, brought this one up, brand new to WCG, in the Beta forum during the Beta17 test series with some researched info... it seems like the task wants to go out of memory bounds [leak?]. It's always the same memory block it seems, so doubt it's hardware related. Too few, not considered a show-stopper, of course always annoying to the one who's encountering this.

Hello cowtipperbs,
Reason: Out Of Memory (C++ Exception) (0xe06d7363) . . .
First place to look is RAM and program load. Windows should automatically expand Virtual Memory, so that should not be a problem.
