Keep losing executed time

Hello,
For some reason I keep losing the execute+rest times. This has happend about 3 times now.
For example Yesterday I had about 3 hours of executed time but this morning only 37 minutes.

This is getting annoying and if this continues I'll opt out of CEP.

Re: Keep losing executed time

Checkpointing on CEP is sometimes hours between saves. If you run CEP it is better that you run 24/7. biggrin

Re: Keep losing executed time

Before shutting down my PC I always check last checkpoint for CEP workunit, if there is any. If there is too much time to loose, I hibernate or suspend my machine and continue crunching next day without loosing too much time or energy :)

Re: Keep losing executed time

Thanks for your replies.

@katoda
How does one check the last checkpoint?
-------------------------------------

This happend again after MS send me Win 8 Update. I had to reboot and again lost all the mornings work.
I am not prepared to run 24/7 and am very surprised that there is not a frequent work save. The current situation is not acceptable and so I'm -very regretfully - blocking this project even if I do support it.

Re: Keep losing executed time

To check checkpointing:
select the workunit in BOINC manager advanced view tab Tasks
press Properties button in Commands section on left
compare "CPU time at last checkpoint" with "CPU time" to see how long since checkpoint.

To avoid losing workunit time use Hibernate or Suspend.
Hibernate saves/restores to/from hard disk.
Suspend puts PC in low power state.
I use Hibernate a lot and only re-boot for security updates or PC/power fails.
Worked OK for me with CEP.

Re: Keep losing executed time

We should consider if hibernate is really a good advice if we don't know the hardware being used.
I take mine as an example:
Boot drive for windows is a 250GB SSD
Memory 64GB
Every hibernation means writing 64GB to the SSD and reading it on wakeup. The life of the SSD would be short. And if I assume a transferrate of 500MB/sec it lasts ~2 minutes going into hibernation or wakeup.
It is not possible to move the hibernation file to a harddisk.

Re: Keep losing executed time

Hello Eric,

hiberfil.sys has to be as large as physical memory is.
But only allocated memory would be written to disk in case of hibernation, not entire 64 GBs.
Few GBs is nothing for SSD ale processes are writing and reading a lot from disk, you can check it via task manager.

Re: Keep losing executed time

I am aware that this topic is covered in the FAQs, but it comes up so often that I wonder if it might be worth giving it an entry of its own in the Sticky Topics, at the top of the CEP forum page.

Re: Keep losing executed time

Suspending PC does not write much to disk, so I prefer to use this state, as I own a SSD as well. Important: so called "hybrid sleep" must be disabled in power options, because with this option enabled used memory is written to to hiberfil.sys and then the PC is suspended - good option if you do not believe your energy supplier, because in case of interruption of energy nothing is lost, the PC will resume from hiberfil.sys.
As my energy supplier is quite decent, I prefer to have this option disabled.

Re: Keep losing executed time

I have some doubts on hibernation and SSD because hybernation file is static and wear leveling should not work in this case (perhaps I'm wrong with that).
Second: Normally I concentrate at one project at the time that means if I run CEP I do this exclusiv for a period of time, In my case 12 tasks in parallel. From the requirements each task consumes 1 GB of memory thus 12 GB in total CEP + Win7 + other Applications that might be up at the moment of hibernation.

My personal solution is that I run CEP only when my computer is up an running >12hrs or I accecpt that I loose some progress if I shutdown before a task is completed.
