Just thought when my 1st son puts WCG to snooze so he can do his own thing after work, l'll put WCG on my 3rd son's PC as he works night shift*. No need to 'Snooze' just set the "While processor usage is less then" setting to 20 or 25% within the profile and Boinc will do the rest.Love it when a plan come's into Action, what a little ![]() ![]() If non-Boinc CPU useage gets above the set percentage then it will pause, then resume after the useage drops, clever really, and your son doesn't have to remember to take it off snooze! I have it set on all mine, and only this, my main PC uses it as the rest just crunch except when I do the weekly/occasional update and restart *edited to appropriate forum language - ErikaT

On the question of processor usage; I've never found a need to use that setting. Because BOINC runs the science as soakers, at the very lowest priority soaking up the spare CPU capacity left after everything has had its time, it shouldn't interfere with normal priority programs at all.
Having said that, some observations: 1) If you have an application that relies on getting good network bandwidth, and the network is busying down/uploading WUs/results, then THAT CAN get in the way. I have restricted what BOINC can use, both up and down, in the "Network" tab of BOINC settings and have noticed a significant improvement in apparent responsiveness of my lappie at certain times, even in areas I didn't really think were a problem before I made that change. 2) There's a theoretical possibility that you might be running something that itself uses soaker-level tasks, but if BOINC interferes with those then they should never have been set as soakers in the first place! 3) If you're running something that uses processors more like a GPU, in that it needs a lot of processor engines running in parallel, then BOINC might interfere with scheduling. If anyone has found this I'd like to know more. 4) On a server running a lot of VMs I have seen BOINC apparently getting in the way, but I never got to the bottom of why/how. I presume this might be related to my comments at 3 and, again, would love to know more. These are just my observations and YMMV. |

@ Apis - With the exception of this PC, all my machines only crunch, so I have no experience with scheduling tasts etc...
----------------------------------------This PC is an AMD FX8350/4Ghz/8 core/32Gb ram so don't experience many issues with this one. As I write this, I'm crunching 8 x MCM and playing music in itunes, with a data backup going on... with no issues I'm about to change it for my SR2 based machine with 2 x X5606's @ 3.74Ghz with 48Gb (yes it's o/c'd) not expecting any issues with that either...

@ jonnieb - how do the points per hour get calculated? I ask as I have serveral different results, using todays morning update figures:
----------------------------------------Mamajuanauk 503.6 13 Mamajuanauk 1,813,389 17 Mamajuanauk 3,090 183,090/503.6=6.1358... My SNURK sig quotes it at 140 My Avg. Points Per Hour of Run Time is 151.27 (my results page) I guess the later two are averages over a given period? However, what perion, is the Avg. Points Per Hour of Run Time figure from when I registered or another point in time? How does Sunrk calculate the same? It bugs me when I don't understand! Many thanks for any clarification you can provide.

Team anyone on Sky Fibre using a 3rd Party Router and got it working as the Sky Hub is crap its not even basic one?
As the router must support in ATM and PPP Protocols • MAC encapsulated routing (RFC 1483 MER) or ir will not work. Thanks. ![]() |

@ Mamajuanauk
----------------------------------------First off you're not comparing like with like! ![]() My Avg. Points Per Hour of Run Time is 151.27 (my results page) IMO this figure is virtually meaningless. Divide Total Points by RunTime (in hours) i.e. 299,829,422 / 1,982,121.3186 = 151.2669 I'll also mention that Avg. Points Per Calendar Day is equally worthless measuring Points divided by Days since sign up which WCG calculates as 758 (I make it 757) so 299,829,422 / 758 = 395,553.3272 Not sure how SNURK calculates his averages but it should say somewhere in the early pages of the sig thread. Note that the figures used above and shown on My Contribution were upfated at lunchtime and will differ slightly from your sig which only updates at midnight. Hope that helps but come back at me if more is required. ![]() |
