Re: Morning Update II

Morning all! smile

Well, it's not the long-planned "beast" server, but hopefully should have something new in my farm later in the week - a dual Xeon 5650 (6-core HT-enabled CPU, so 24 threads in total) server. Should help with my decline in stats a little bit, anyway!

Sounds like a nice addition, I run a few of those CPU's they work well.

What sort of average daily stats do you see from them, roughly?

Output will depend on the MB and RAM speed and the OS you use as well as other software that may be running, check out this thread - The 'New Toy'
this was that I got at the start...

Currently it's returning around 70K points per node...

each node is a 2p server...

Re: Morning Update II

Glad you're running that in a data-centre, I'd dread to think of the electricity-costs if you tried to run it from home! biggrin

For my big plans, I'm still torn between a run-at-home pedestal-server (that would support GPUs when it becomes available) or a data-centre install for a 1U or 2U server (as I've found a place down-south that can co-locate a "single-motherboard" server up to 4U for about £50/month with completely unmetered power-usage - not bad considering I worked out the Opteron build I'd been considering could draw almost 6A).

Electric costs are not the main issue, the noise is! it only runs about 900 watts flatout, however, the cooling fans are high speed and make a lot of noise.

The hosting cost you mention doesn't sount bad, but I would check how much power your system will use and even build and test before committing as it may not be a costly as you think...

Let us know you get on...

I can only imagine how bad the noise would be with full-load server-spec fans!

As a comparison, a while ago, I picked up a Scythe "Gentle Typhoon" 5400rpm CPU-fan for my desktop machine, as a spare, and decided to test it one weekend. When fitted, with the case-side fitted, with the machine at idle, I could still hear the fan through two closed doors inside my flat - I dread to think what it'd be like at full-load! biggrin

And yes, if I was going down the route of a data-centre install, I'd be building at home and testing it for a week or two first, just to make sure it runs OK and work out how much power it was using at sustained full-load - could be interesting to see how loud a 1U 4-CPU server with four Opteron 6378's in (which was the original plan) would be!
