Has anyone tried/considered trying an Amazon AWS EC2 instance for running WCG-crunching? If tried, what sort of performance was obtained, compared to the cost of running it?

Has anyone tried/considered trying an Amazon AWS EC2 instance for running WCG-crunching? If tried, what sort of performance was obtained, compared to the cost of running it? I looked into it, however, did not get past the setting up account part! The problem is to do with Amazon not being able to use the security code on the UK cards, so I could not enter a card that would be accepted by the bank to charge the costs to... Well, that's the issue I had anyway... I would have done some testing to see how performance and costs compared to output and costs of running a server farm. My reasoning was that it's easier to find £xx per month than £xxxx to build a new machine and then the cost of the electricity... When I have time, I may look into it again with other providers.

Am also looking at the comparison between AWS EC2 and running a dedicated server from the likes of kimsufi.com or wholesaleinternet.net (both recommended to me by people here in work).

New Stats Project
----------------------------------------This thread pointed out that the WCG provided stats in My Contribution specifically Avg. Run Time Per Calendar Day and Avg. Points Per Calendar Day have little relevance to members because they run from the date the account was created. Using Scribe (who's been here since the dawn of time) as an example Avg. Run Time Per Calendar Day returns 0:006:05:55:06 and Avg. Points Per Calendar Day 20,704 when he is currently averaging around 15 RTd per day and 60,000 Pts. pd. Scribe helpfully linked to the exellent Free-DC The problem I have with Free-DC (and other BOINC stat sites) is that they only report Recent Average Creditt (Points). Given the recent moans throughout the forum about Points allocation, particularly CEP2 and FAAH, I prefer to survey and report RunTime, Points and Results. The new stats project will therefore report Average RunTime/ Points/Results per day on a Year todate/Last 28 days/Last 7 days basis. Sadly the antiquated forum software will not let me replicate the Free-DC graphics. ![]() |

Will you be including me before I'm a member of the UK team? Unfortunately I can't (at the moment) ![]() If you follow this link (for each of your accounts) and work backwards to calculate your to date stats as of 31/12/13 I will be able to make the necessary adjustments. I have started to capture your daily output stats from Jul 9, and note that the Mamajuana acciunt was last active 03 July 2014 ![]() |
