Re: Air Days 2014

It's another bright sunny day and I caught the sun a tadge more than I thought yesterday blushing
Will have to try to find a slightly more shady spot to stand in this afternoon and get a bit of shelter from the strong sunshine, don't really want to be looking all pink and red!

Re: Air Days 2014

I vaguely remember seeing the Vulcan do a fly-over at an air-show my parents took me to when I was a very young nipper. My memory involves seeing a small blob in the sky way in the distance, then the entire Earth start to shake and a noise unlike anything I'd ever heard before start to build up! Phenomenal machine! biggrin

Re: Air Days 2014

A Vulcan overhead in low level flight is an awesome experience. Saw one at the last airshow at RAF Gaydon before it closed circa 1978

My only flying, other than normal passenger jets, was as a passenger in a 2 man glider. Launch was by means of a Landrover towing until we got sufficient lift. Fantastic feeling - hundreds of feet above the Cotswolds with virtually no sound. Landing was a bit nerve wracking. The passenger sits at the front in the nose with only the thin metal skin between you and the rapidly approaching earth!

Re: Air Days 2014

You're so right Thargor, back when the RAF could give it some welly the ground would shake when a Vulcan was about. The trust who have XH-558 have to treat it with a lot more care as it is the only one left flying. Even so, it is still superb to see it fly and just get a reminder of those air days at the RAF camp near me when you had lots of noise and that howl that only seems to be from a Vulcan. Just simply superb.
Found a bit of shelter but have still managed to catch the sun again, starting to settle now that I'm cooling down.

Not liking the sound of being in front there JonnieB of a glider hypnotized

Re: Air Days 2014

Vulcan? Nah, for pure awesome raw power, nothing IMO can match the Lightning.

I was based at a radar station near Scarborough and a Lightning overflew at a very low height, hit his burners and went vertical.

Apparently people inside a bunker designed to withstand a small nuke heard & felt it!

I was outside & thought my chest was going to burst with the noise!

I remember it quite vividly from 1980.

Re: Air Days 2014

Oooo, not seen a Lightning for yonks, don't know if there is one still flying. But, yes, it is a bit of a beast. And of course back then they could put some serious power out, unlike now of course with these old planes.

Also just noticed that as I type this, both Barnsley and JonnieB have 232 days/project RT. Spooky eh?
