In a couple of days or so, I am going to do a small experiment to see precisely how much electricity is actually used by running everything I have at once. When I was with EON, my dual fuel account was £165+ per month (despite aggressive & over the top energy saving methods being put in place during my time with them, partly to compensate for the multiple PC's running), now I've switched, I'm averaging under £60 per month and the only thing to realistically explain £100+ per month drop is the fact I'm only running 1 PC. I don't believe that those other PC's would seriously cost THAT much to run, I think I was mostly being ripped off, so I will boot everything up for 2 weeks continuously and see If I'm right, I may not go back to full production, but I may start a 2nd PC running permanently. I have just updated my tariff to an even cheaper one, but it won't kick in until the 1st July, so my experiment will begin on the 2nd July (if I'm going to test it, I might as well have it cost me as little as possible ).So 2nd July, I'm booting everything up for 2 weeks and will then double that to calculate how much extra that would have cost me for the whole month, then divide by 5 to get an approximate average on how much each extra PC costs me to run (there are 5 PC's sitting idle), then I will have a chat with the wife and see if I can justify the additional cost of an extra 1 or 2 I7's running Even if we decide it isn't justifiable, the team will atleast get a slight increase to help with it's next targets for 2 weeks ![]() I thought the point of distributed computing that it is utilising 'spare' processing capacity in machines already running but not being used to their full capacity?: rather than running numerous machines just for the purpose of crunching (or have I missed the point?) Anyway rather than doing your experiment - why not use 'maths' I reckon that a modern mid to hi spec PC under load might consume say 200-300W; running 24/7 and assuming a unit of electricity costing 15p incl VAT would give: (assuming 300W):0.3*24*365*0.15 = £394.20 pa (i.e. £32.85 per PC per calendar month) (assuming 200W):0.2*24*365*0.15 = £262.80 pa (i.e. £21.90 per PC per calendar month) so running 5 PC's 24/7 would easily cost £100 per month. |

Mmm, up one (in runtime) and down one (in results) in the same update. But the general trend is still downwards until I can justify replacing one of my machines.
Just spotted TMC's good news too. Sorry to be late to the party, but that's really excellent news. I hope something changes in your wife's workplace, TMC, even if it's only sentiment. |

@ Dr. Orange:
----------------------------------------I thought the point of distributed computing that it is utilising 'spare' processing capacity in machines already running but not being used to their full capacity?: rather than running numerous machines just for the purpose of crunching (or have I missed the point?) To my mind, the point is to Cure and Advance knowledge, so if people are willing then why not run everything to hand Anyway rather than doing your experiment - why not use 'maths' Not quite the point, referring to an earlier post of mine, it's not just to judge how much each PC costs to run, but to also find out how much my old Gas & Elecy provider was ripping me off by, and then make a judgment call on how much extra (if any), I can throw at the research. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
