Its really is a joke now and reading thru the thread about donation and stuff its said that Krembil is the legal owner but doesnt supply any support and its all down to the Researcher Dr J (MCM) to get funding (hence all the problems) which i find very odd as Krembil is advertising about taking over and running WCG and if that is truely the case why didnt they tell us that at the change over and ask for donations to help, i would of been inclined to help then but now with the current consistent lack of information and no clear path or information i wont be.
----------------------------------------I too think i will be slowing down overall now and dont think ill be running it anymore on my home pc specially as the weather gets warmer (plus energy costs, ive almost halfed my pc running cost by not crunching this month) and wont be adding it to new work pc as they get updated/replaced. |

I would have thought that IBM would have vetted Krembil to check they had the hardware (with some resilience for hardware failures) and technical resource to support the project before handover. I get the impression that either that didn't happen (IBM didn't care and just wanted rid) or Krembil massively oversold themselves.
----------------------------------------Its like having a hardware failure in the early 90s here right now and the project needs to be run be an organisation with the resources to do that, along with some communication ability. Sorry but I wouldn't offer any financial support to Krembil as I just don't believe they are the right organisation to be running this project and need to hand it over before it is too late.

I get the impression that either that didn't happen (IBM didn't care and just wanted rid) or Krembil massively oversold themselves. It just may have been that Krembil was the only organization which expressed any interest in taking over over once IBM decided to off load the project. Perhaps if they had not taken it over, the project would have just been shut down. I seem to remember that not only did IBM start this project as a humanitarian endeavor, but also used it as a proving ground for various technologies it wished to advance. Just speculating here, but once the corporate objectives had been accomplished and the bean counters decided the the resource allocation to the project no longer justified the corporate return (even in technical advances and good will) the project was off loaded to whomever would take it, whether they had the requisite resources or not. Too bad somebody like TACC(Texas Advanced Computing Center) or The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign couldn't have taken over at least on an interim basis until a more permanent home could be found. Cheers

I was thinking of starting up on a small scale in the next few weeks, but after reading what I'm reading, I'm unsure I'll bother??

I'm starting to think that Krembil's data centre is located in the Ukraine! Still no success uploading completed work and downloading new.

So I've been out of the country for a week, and was worried that when I got back all of my tasks trying to upload would have expired. But no, absolutely no change! What on earth are they playing at.

So I've been out of the country for a week, and was worried that when I got back all of my tasks trying to upload would have expired. But no, absolutely no change! What on earth are they playing at. Step by step recovery. They want to make sure they get it right. I could be a smart aleck and say they are only using baby steps, but I certainly would not want to do that. ![]() Cheers

The disk failed, which turned out to be the controller, but they have backups right? They've replaced these now? What's left to do? {edited to add} ah I've seen https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,45101 now, that was the bit I had missed. Looks like it's going to be working soon but we've been here several times before... ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by AlanS at Mar 28, 2023 4:15:41 PM] |
