Re: Workunits

Nice to hear from you Rod. By complete accident I stumbled across an article about your wine collection the other day 🤣

I'm only crunching for a few hours at night on cheap electricity, using a lowly Intel n100, so no return to battling it out with the big players. However, it would be nice to get a new badge. If only there were some units for this new project. Soon, hopefully.

Re: Workunits

No sign of any work units for the new project, nor any kind of communication from WCG about it.They really know how to maintain an active and thriving community, don't they? I now know why I left (twice). It's a shame that they don't have resources to run it properly. Shame on IBM, who did/do.

Dave, I would be fascinated to look at my wine collection article again. Where did you see it?

Sorry to make a mention that you overlooked some noteworthy posts in the forums and/or the MAM1-beta update. So, MAM1 (or the new project, as you say) is still in beta testing and I suppose that it isn't necessary to mention that everybody knows that testing a new project will take some while as usual.

Thanks. I knew the project was undergoing beta testing and had been for a while. However, the WGC website now lists it as active research, "just launched". It's showing on the stats but with zero data. There's nothing in the official news forums, or anything like that, hence my disappointment.

Dave, I would be fascinated to look at my wine collection article again. Where did you see it?

It was on a fine wine website, which I got to via something about investment opportunities. I recognised your name and continued reading.
This isn't the original article, but it was something like this:

I know what you mean, it's there indeed. More people noticed this (e.g. in the "MAM is close to offical release?" thread). However, if you look at the available forums for current projects (Active Research), there we see OPN, ARP and MCM as forum names (I've abbreviated the names, since you're already familiar with them smile ). MAM is nevertheless (still) missing.

There's nothing in the official news forums, or anything like that, hence my disappointment.

I understand. You may have missed some thingies that went by. There is an announcement in the official newsletter of August 2025. To be honest, I think it is a bit early to announce the launch of the project in the way it was done, while we're still in the beta testing phase. Misunderstandings are prone to occur.

Furthermore, and this is for the better informed people, in the most recent "Project Status (First Post Updated)" thread, where unofficial news/info is being posted by WCG members, you'll find - in the first post of that thread - a link to the "Official Status Update", the (official) webpage of the WCG (tech) staff.

Re: Workunits

Thanks for that additional update Adri. It's much appreciated. I used to be an enthusiastic cruncher (as you can see from my stats) and maintained an independent stats website for Team UK, but for reasons we all know about it has been difficult to maintain any enthusiasm over the past several years. The lack of coordinated official communication adds to that disappointment. I will try to keep going for a little longer - it would be nice to get some more badges, and the addiction is still hard to shake biggrin

Re: Workunits

Dave, thanks for the acknowledgement.
I've always admired people who keep statistics on their personal website and yours was a treat. Still, a stripped down version of one page of your website exists on archive.org thanks to one web crawl.

I believe that it is important to not have (too) many or (too) high expectations to avoid disappointments that you don't want to happen.

Anyway, I hope you noticed the official message, published on 29 August, about 'imminent downtime' over the next 48h etc. while they are migrating WCG to new cloud facilities.
