Re: smile smile Just Testing Something 2: Everyone Welcome smile smile

Fair enough John. I keep costing up getting a new high end machine just for crunching, but the amount I would have to spend makes me realise it's not worth it. I have a preference for just getting hold of cheap refurbs for crunching, either borrow them from work or getting them cheap of eBay or something.

I thought of doing this too but don't feel justified running old machines that may return a result every three or four days vs the cost of electricity to run them. My power bill is already high, what with air conditioning and running 10 pc's 24/7.
My last high end machine was bought in March and that's going to have to be it for quite a while. Money's needed elsewhere. Besides, I think it best to wait until Vista comes out. Last thing I need now is another XP box. Got nine already. Vista's hardware requirements are said to be pretty demanding in order to use all of it's features. Be interesting to see the new crop of hardware it'll be loaded on.

Hope you're having a good day. smile

Wouldn't be surprised. RAM has gotten so cheap that OEM's are offering more machines with a full gig of it preinstalled when, just a couple of months ago, 512Mb was the norm. It'll probably take at least 1 gig to be able to use all of Vista's features, along with a powerful graphics card. The hardware makers are gonna' love Vista! biggrin

As I am not a gamer I cannot justify a fancy GPU..........By the time Vista debuts I will probably be fully Linux'ed...bar one rig.

Don't see the point in an expensive os for rigs that have monitors turned off 23 hours per day
