Graphics and lockup issues

Relative newbie, but enjoy building machines.

Had system locks-up when using Firefox or Comodo Browsers primarily, other programs intermittently, also occasionally artifacts pixelation on the browser screen.

This seems to have started after adding Einstein, but my logs showed Minirosetta graphics as having issues.

Reduced issue after changing Graphics in BOINC manager to run GPU based upon preferences from use GPU always. Need to set the GPU preferences, currently unset looks and it looks like it's all of the time. Suggestions appreciated, including "it's successive approximations" appreciated

I do have some processes excluded under CPU, and it's set for 25% of the processors, at most 30% of CPU time. Don't mind donating more, if it doesn't bring up slow down issues.

Is switch between applications every 120 minutes (I think it's stock) the best way to set this up?

Lastly, I've seen some posts with the person's stats under the signature line. How do I acquire and install that info. so I can further embarrass myself? biggrin

System stuff
Win 8, 64
BOINC manager 7.0.64 but changed to 7.1 beta 6/24/13 as a test with no real improvement noted.
AMD FX 8320 "8 core" 3.5GHz
HIS AMD 7850, latest driver from AMD, WHQL

Re: Graphics and lockup issues

Hi,

Regarding the artifacts, I would start by disabling any overclock you might have and by checking the temperatures. You may want to disable GPU usage while the computer is being used. I would also set to use 100% of the processors and CPU time. You should experience no slowdown with this because of the way BOINC works(if other apps need the CPU, BOINC will release it accordingly). If you are worried about the CPU temps, Throttle is a much better way of controlling them(it allows you to set a certain temperature and it will automatically throttle BOINC;also works for GPU's IIRC). I have my "switch between applications"setting set to 9000 so that once BOINC initiats a task it won't change to another until it's completed. Regarding the signature, you can ask for one here.

Hope I helped.

Re: Graphics and lockup issues

WCG does not use the graphics card for the science, only when your system is idling and the BOINC screensaver comes on, so if you set the screensaver to blank, you pretty much completely excluded WCG as the cause of your graphics and lockup issues (what kind of lockups?).

BTW, 7.1 is -NOT- Beta, it's Alpha. If you have to have it, it's hard to diagnose since there's rapidly coming out new versions.... 7.1.19 in the cooker. When 7.2.xx starts appearing you may call it Beta until the developers mark one as 'recommended', which to my taste they always do rather quick. This time it might be even quicker.

Oh, hey, welcome to the forums :D

(Sits back with sloped shoulders, and awaits rebuff ;)
