Our system requirements page needs an update. The only project that we have left that supports PPC Mac is Help Fight Childhood Cancer. Once new work is available for that project, then PPC Macs will again be able to process work.
However, only 219 PPC Macs have requested work in the past 30 days and that number is continuing to shrink. As a result, there will not be new projects available for that platform once Help Fight Childhood Cancer completes. For comparison, there have been over 130 Android Devices attached to World Community Grid in the past 30 days. There isn't anything for them to run either, but it is interesting to see that people are experimenting with it. |

And my apologies - just reviewed our announcement of the upgrade for Autodock that we did earlier this year and realized that we failed to inform you that PPC Mac was not going to be supported with the new version of Autodock. I apologize for this oversight.

Hi knreed,
----------------------------------------Thanks for the quick reply.Although I'm a bit confused by your replies. Are you saying that we need to wait for HFCC work? or Are you saying thats it. No more PPC work at all? Or something else? Or am I just being thick? (I can hear a flamethrower firing up somewhere...)![]() ![]() ![]() |

Yes, when target 11 comes for HFCC there will be PPC work [The Chiba scientists are waiting on an other science group to successfully crystallize a specific protein, which then has to be passed through x-ray crystallography to be able to build the model against which we can run the docking simulations of the library [don't know if it's the same library either that's composed of 2.854 million compounds]. How that pans out for the future of PPC at WCG is no predicting though... as you see, there's been only 230 devices asking. Eventually there wont be enough devices to have a guaranteed maximum turnaround time.
----------------------------------------edit: What puzzled me a bit BTW was that the FAAH upgrade took place several months ago at which point PPC work dried up and no one reporting in till May ~1. Guess the HCC storm veiled that absence. edit2: The System Requirements page was updated to reflect Intel only for FAAH and of the active/intermittent HFCC as the only one left to support PPC. OK, got it.
----------------------------------------Back to SIMAP for this dinosaur until hfcc target 11. Thanks Rob. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Unfortunately, such a development has been a long time coming. Apple certainly hasn't helped, since they pretty much dropped software support for PowerPC like a rock once the Intel transition was complete. I'm not up to speed on the processor news; is IBM Power used for much these days besides embedded applications?
----------------------------------------What other PowerPC BOINC projects are people running? The only ones I still get work for are SIMAP and Enigma@Home. Rosetta and Einstein claim to still have PPC support according to their Applications pages, but I've not managed to get any work from them. Are there any others I should know about? On a side note, I must express my appreciation for SIMAP, as they have applications for a large number of processor platforms and operating systems--though some of them require manual installation. I'd be willing to bet that, among BOINC projects, they have the most diverse selection of platforms. |

I should also point out that the System Requirements page still lists PowerPC support (rather, a lack of an Intel requirement) for Computing for Clean Water, Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together - Phase 2 and Help Conquer Cancer, which will take care of itself shortly.
----------------------------------------The current arrangement of the system requirements information using footnotes seems a little crowded; perhaps OS/GPU support could be presented in a clearer manner? |

Hi noderaser,
I should also point out that the System Requirements page still lists PowerPC support (rather, a lack of an Intel requirement) for Computing for Clean Water, Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together - Phase 2 and Help Conquer Cancer, which will take care of itself shortly. The current arrangement of the system requirements information using footnotes seems a little crowded; perhaps OS/GPU support could be presented in a clearer manner? I don't want to argue over picky points, but the historical requirements for old projects that are no longer active is a low priority issue. The system requirements page can be substantially revised after we finish HPF2 and GFAM. At which time, a footnote of some sort saying that HFCC is the only project for MAC PPC will seem quite appropriate. Sigh . . I remember how happy I was when WCG started supporting the MAC. I was very nonplussed when Apple quickly announced the shift to Intel. Lawrence |

Rosetta and Einstein claim to still have PPC support according to their Applications pages, but I've not managed to get any work from them. My G5's kept busy with Einstein@home and MilkyWay@home tasks. Only one sub-project for each, though, and Einstein now only supports Altivec PPCs. It looks as if SETI@home is still offering a couple of PPC apps (what its Applications page lists as "Mac OS/X 10.3+"). NG |

to the [often to be created] cc_config.xml ... The manual to edit/create the file is here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Cc_config.xml offtopic, but i have noticed new Linux clients already have cc_config.xml file in place when you install it via apt-get install boinc-client Not sure about new windows clients |
