jhindo World Community Grid Admin
----------------------------------------has posted: ericinboston you raise good and interesting points and I'd to address a few of these if I may.. (1) Notification method We've have a high threshold of what we communicate over email as we don't want to litter people's inboxes. Therefore an announcement that a project is ending is typically contained within the forums. But maybe we need to rethink that. You feel that such information is buried in the forums and you shouldn't be expected to sift through the forums on a regular basis. That's a fair comment. We're starting to think about our communication strategy: what to notify members about and how to communicate those notifications. So I'll certainly take your feedback into account. I'm curious though as to why you it's so important for you to hear that a project is ending. Is it to make sure you get to the next badge level, or do you feel like in this case, the project is wrapping up without you understanding why it's finishing, what it's achieved and hopes to achieve? If it's the latter, rest assured this isn't the last you've heard of the HCC team! (2) Hard to understand project updates I take your comment about technical project updates seriously. We heard that several times in the volunteer study we recently conducted. The challenge is how to explain a complex and lengthy scientific process in terms that you and I can understand. We are thinking about how we can improve this and we're challenging our researchers to provide laymen summaries along with what you call 'mumbo jumbo' :) I'll be honest though, this is no easy task and may take some time and a lot of trial and error to get it right, so please bear with us! As always, appreciate everyone's honest input. Original post and We don't typically announce that a project is wrapping up in Member News but have sometimes emailed members once a project has completed (so they can switch over to other projects). But we are starting to think about our communication strategy overall: what to notify members of and how to communicate that information. So your feedback comes at a good time and we'll be taking this into account. PS. there has been a similar discussion here . Original post jhindo has previously been described by SekeRob as 'Chief' World Community Grid Admin It's another illustration of the confused nature of WCG's current communications strategy that two posts of interest to the wider community are buried as answers in two different threads. It's good to know that WCG are reconsidering their overall communication strategy. I again suggest a WCG blog or a WCG news site. WCG Twitter (@WCGrid) is nice but largely irrelevant when it comes to hard news -last week's validation hiccup didn't rate a mention. Scribe has suggested use of the BOINC Mgr 'Notices' feature in this post which is an excellent idea. The WCG forum as good as it is, only represents a small (though vociferous) fraction of WCG members. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by jonnieb-uk at May 9, 2013 8:56:24 AM] |

Just to add to what I spouted before. I do not think I would be happy with Twitterbook or its ilk, they are something I avoid like the plague - we wrinklies over 70 tend to be behind the times..........a GPO Telegram would be fine!

In 1969 I took an oath to defend and protect the U S Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and Domestic. There was no expiration date.

Likewise, I don't use either Twitter or Facebook (I know, shock horror
----------------------------------------![]() ![]() As to using the Notice facility, I don't think this can be relied on because not everyone uses v7. Isn't v6.10.58 still the official version downloaded from here? An email to say a project is coming to an end or being suspended due to lack of work units would be fine for me, it's hardly going to be every day that these emails would be sent is it? But I do have a feeling that whatever is done won't please everyone. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by genhos at May 9, 2013 12:48:26 PM] |

As part of the overall rethink of communications strategy I would hope that WCG revisits communication with Team members both by WCG and by Team Captains. If Teams are viewed as important to WCG then it should follow that there should be an effective way of communicating with team members. The present opt-in to receive emails from Team Captains is woefully inadequate. If a team exists solely within the confines of WCG then membership of a team is largely pointless unless a member, of their own volition, participates in the forum.

I think we are volunteers, not employees of a company. Volunteer means we should be aware of the communications available, the forums are the best communication tools we have. If one becomes a volunteer, one should be responsible for being updated by reading the posts in forums, WCG organization don´t have to send e-mails, post in Facebook or twitter (personally I don´t use none), at least not for warning a project is close to the end. If one is interested in managing one´s crunching, please, be tuned here in the forums.

@ Mauro Xavier
---------------------------------------- the forums are the best communication tools we have Nice idea but the facts show otherwise: Only 166,459 out of 616,015 members have even registered for the forum. Of those who are registered less than 12,000 have ever posted! I don't think the forum is working as an effective communication tool for the majority of members. |

Most are readers only visiting as 'guest', which is when you visit 'Who's Online' always the far biggest group. Presently:
There are 665 Online Users (615 Guests, 50 Members ) that's 12 fold to signed in members. Was BTW unaware you needed to register for the forum... becoming a member [creating an account and arriving to My Grid] gives seamless access to posting in the forums. Did look at the Forum summary and indeed it says now 166460... guess, it's members who've visited the forums after signing in to their account. How many arrive to WCG via another project, just create an account, select the sciences and be done... I have no idea, but think it's a very big number. If WCG were full BOINC enabled on the interface side, many would just enter email address / password desired in their client and be done. some will read forums, many will rely on Notices. Given though the far higher retention rate at WCG compared to elsewhere, there must be more reach out for that to be, but as noted, the WCG team is looking at further improvements, see if anything was missed not already mentioned in the 17000 questionnaires that were received. |
