WU - Duration?

I think I've made a bit of a mistake, but before I go any further, whats the average duration to complete a work unit?

I'm currently taking about 2 hours per unit.

My rig is an i7 Sandy Bridge, running at 3.4Ghz (stock). 8 Cores, but I only use 4 for 'crunching'.

Average run times are always in flux. This is a graph that shows the past year for various measures on GFAM. http://bit.ly/WCGFAM

Re: WU - Duration?

It kind of depends a lot on your machine and how new it is. I happen to have a i7 laptop too (about 2 1/2 years old now) and recently bought a newer i7 laptop for my older son. For me, my old i7 is running GFAM WUs around 6-7 hours at a time, but for my son's new i7, it is cranking them out around in about 2 to 3 hours. Now both of these i7 laptops are four core machines, but obviously the newer laptops have a much faster clock speed and are generally much better technology, so in the process you see a big difference in how long those WUs are processed.

Re: WU - Duration?

My old AMD FX-8120 Ubuntu 13.04 desktop gets around 15.75 minutes per work unit. My even older Phenom II X6 Ubuntu 12.04 machines get 21 minutes per work unit.

I wish I had the newer FX-8300s since they are known to run 30% faster per clock than FX-8100s while also clocking a lot higher. The next generation of FX is to continue to increase that IPC by 30% on top of FX 8300s 30% with even higher clocks. The new processors could very well be over twice as fast as FX-8100s.

I don't think you guys are calculating your numbers right. It's average return time divided by number of cores equals total throughput in time per completed work unit.

Re: WU - Duration?

My old P3 took over 10 hours for each of the last two GFAM WUs it did.

I think it's about time you put that machine to rest.
