I'm going to go out on a limb here....back in my earlier posts I mentioned how I was uninformed that the HCC Project was going to end...and some here thought, in essence, that was my fault for not visiting the forums all the time.
----------------------------------------Well, I have noticed that my Current Ranking has shot through the roof since HCC shut down. I have not added machines or adjusted any computers. This can only mean one thing...there are others (lots) out there running HCC and put it into the "set it and forget it" category like I *generally* do. Those poor people, however, are no longer doing any work...because their owners have not realized HCC is gone. Sadly, their machines are likely doing nothing right now. I watch my Current Rank almost daily and the rate at which I am getting closer the top of the heap is much, much, much faster than when HCC was alive. It's possible some people actively decided NOT to participate in any other Projects after HCC ended...but I really believe that would be a small minority. My CR is under 500 right now which means the people I am passing (the top 500 of all of WCG) are quickly losing rank and likely because they have no clue HCC ended and it's time to find another Project to help. I feel this is even more proof that Projects really need to communicate better/more often with the volunteers. ![]() |

You did not get the May 29 HCC Webcast invitation either via the E-blast [all members mail]?
The admins are onboarding all thoughts rethinking on how to improve [see e.g. post by jhindo]. BTW, racing up the ranks is because there were lots who joined specifically to do GPU crunching, which had some 18x higher credit yield per unit of time. Naturally they will have taken their hardware to other projects where the GPU is utilized. Those are mostly hands-on volunteers. |

Yes, I got the email on May 29 about the webcast...I could not attend.
----------------------------------------My point was that I never, ever, got anything BEFORE HCC shut down that it was going to shut down. We don't need to repeat all the posts from the first 3 pages of this thread. :) I was just making a point about the CR and I don't think it's your GPU explanation. ![]() |

You can easily check (and count) how many people around your position stopped crunching at WCG since HCC1 ended (app. May 10th) here
----------------------------------------ETA ...I was just making a point about the CR and I don't think it's your GPU explanation It is your right not to agree with Seke's explanation. Anyway, it is covering (almost) all answers to your speculations. ETA2 ![]() ![]() Crunching@Home since January 13 2000. The more likely reason that you are shooting up the ranks is because HCC was a GPU enabled project. Many people brought on new graphics crunchers while yet many more switched their cards over to this project to get the massive points boost. Those machines are still there and still crunching for other projects but the graphics cards have moved on. Be assured they will return when there is another GPU enabled project. As for the "set and forget" crowd, they are far more likely to just use WCG default settings which would opt them in to any project running when they installed as well as any projects added later. Those who take the time to specifically set one science are far more likely to return and check their status from time to time. ![]() Distributed computing volunteer since September 27, 2000 |

But but but,
"The more likely reason that you are shooting up the ranks is because HCC was a GPU enabled project. Many people brought on new graphics crunchers while yet many more switched their cards over to this project to get the massive points boost." This gambit was already rejected by eric......and I don't think it's your GPU explanation What do we know to be close reason ;>)The "set/forget" being most often default with "If there is no work for..." is also a fair point. Some of the drop also had a technical reason, which knreed and devs in Berkeley are working on still... 't was GPU originated in set-off too. The "Not received work since about May 1" discussing thread is a related topic. |

My newly bought GPU is now crunching MilkyWay and looking forward to seeing some new WCG GPGPU sub-project (I hope it will last that long - if not, I will replace it with newer one ![]() ![]() Cheers, NI! and ![]() ![]() Crunching@Home since January 13 2000. Can't argue with someone who isn't willing to reason. My only defense is Occam's Razor.

Interesting the different views expressed here. My personal concern is about the future rather than the past. We never seem to know what is coming till it is here. I would for example love to know about when we might expect new projects and what they are expected to be. It would make my planning more effective.
