Re: Really upset with HCC

I agree with Scribe that controlled use of the 'Notice' facility in BOINC Manager would be an excellent option to communicate news/important information to members. I emphasise controlled because inappropriate or over use would degrade the value of the 'notice' facility.

Re: Really upset with HCC

The HCC Update of April [most project updates by WCG] have been send to through Notices [client v7 required], timestamped 11/4/13 12:40:56.

The Notices reminder interval can be set, via tools > options, to:

- Always [so you also get client action messages when there's a problem to that requires user correction]
- 1 hour
- 6 hours
- 1 day
- 1 week
- never [View them at leisure].

In all cases, the notices do arrive. Except for latter there's a pop-up balloon [In windows **, not seen on Ubuntu as there is no panel icon yet to facilitate]. When never was opted, whenever you feel the need to check, hit the notices tab, but notices are only retained for like 14-30 days (first time connect pulls last 30 days, then drops them gradually). The devs in Berkeley are all ears how to improve this BOINC feature, as noted, only used by very few projects (Imagine as one wrote who had his client attached to 55 projects... a tester ;)

Overuse... yes, of the few, there's one too prolific in the deployment... drowns out the 'important' messages, particular the user action warnings.

edit: The BOINC Manager must be loaded of course for the pop-up function to operate in systray.

Re: Really upset with HCC

It has been stated several times now that WCG is sending notices via the notices tab. For these Notices to work with most users, WCG needs to change the provided version of the client up to v7. It is still currently 6.10.58 (Download Page). WCG is be sending "notices" that the client it is providing does not receive. Once that is done, then we have to get the "average joe" crunchers to update to the new client. I have always stayed with the "recommended" client as it has been stated many times in this forum that there are problems with the other clients.

Cheers coffee

Re: Really upset with HCC

NixChix, we are currently working on adopting v7 of the client, so we'll be able to benefit from the Notices tab at that point.

@ NixChix
Once that is done, then we have to get the "average joe" crunchers to update to the new client.

According to figures posted by knreed here of the 17,377 computers currently running CEP2 1,450 are running BOINC Manager versions earlier even than 6.10.58 the WCG "approved" version!

It won't be easy getting them all upgraded.

Re: Really upset with HCC

biggrin
I was really surprised to see that most computers were running BOINC 7 and roughly a quarter were running the 3 most recent versions.

A little development 'Notices' history digging showed that [my] memory was expiring... the 'Notices' tab actually was implemented from v6.12: See http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/ProjectNotices, which increases the percent who're already having the direct message benefit (Those who're crunching outside of WCG, are the most likely higher adopters, particularly in... the HCC-GPU crunching field.)

In summary numbers, of the said 17,377
1450 prior to 6.10.58 (8.3%)
6791 on 6.10.58/60 (39.1%)
747 on 6.12 (4.3%)
8389 on 7.0+ (48.3% including 9 test builds)

Is this a problem with the WCG distribution of BOINC? I have the Berkeley version of 6.12.35 on a PowerPC Mac, and it's got the "Notices" tab under Advanced view... In simple view, the same content is shown by clicking the "Messages" button.

This functionality existed prior to v6 and the "Notices" tab, though you had to wade through other server messages to view them.

I have something to look forward to. wink

I am somewhat surprised of the high percentage of clients higher than 6.10.58. As someone pointed out there are quite a few crunchers that are working other projects and may have gotten their clients elsewhere, including direct from Berkely.

@noderacer: I think the client version that WCG distributes is prior to the implementation of the Notices tab. You have a later version.

Cheers coffee

smile Re: Really upset with HCC

I'm running version 7.1.

When the new version is released, maybe an email could be sent recommending the upgrade? This is probably worth it.

Regarding the science updates, maybe one email could be sent every 4 months with everything worth of note that happened in that time period, like this

".... The following projects had science updates:

---HCC - Scientists have announced the discovery of ... and the end of the project.
---GFAM - Scientists have announced the discovery of...

and other stuff like:

" A new project looking for a new way to grow hair was launched on the 5th of june 2013. The project is run by the researchers at the University of..."

"Also, we updated the World Community Grid Client to version 7.X.X.X and we recommend all users to upgrade."

Something like this every 4 months. It's detailed and 1 email per 4 months isn't going fill anyone's inbox.
