Hmmm
----------------------------------------I just run a send/receive but my download got stuck. Got stuck at 835751 of 837188........waited a while to no avail so I forced it to send the next one. That one sent/received fully but didn't switch back to oldest unit afterwards, and didn't "show" the new unit......still said "result" in the cache. Anyway...shutdown ud mon and re-opened it. My question is.....Should I delete the unit that didn't seem to fully download and fetch a new one? Note: These "glitches" were during the latest stats run though I am sure that is unrelated. edit: Will disable the slot til advised [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 30, 2005 12:43:08 PM] |

Hi vaio,
I think that very few people have been running UD Monitor on the World Community Grid. As I recall, Rick Alther, WCG programmer, has posted to discourage its use. Unless there is some expert with contrary advice, I would suggest discarding any work unit that is not ready to process correctly. [I am no expert, obviously.] Since you do use UD Monitor, you can tell me: What is the main use of UD Monitor and under what circumstances does it make sense to use it? Given the ease of hooking up multiple computers to a router, it seems like an extra level of complication to me. mycrofth |

Hi Mycrofth
I think UDMon is for those people who are on dial-up, rather than DSL (always on). If you're away from you're machine, say at work, a completed WU will not be able to upload and hence the machine will remain idle. Perhaps vaio can correct me if I am wrong? |

Yes, VAIO summed it up nicely.
----------------------------------------For example, if I went to bed midway thru a four hour unit my rig would complete the unit hours before I got back to it and would idle for ages. I have dsl but still choose to manually return my results, as I disconnect habitually when not actually browsing. Also, 3 machines have to share one usb network connection....some of them don't even have regular 56k modems installed So for me ud mon is not a luxury but a neccessity. I am sure there are many users here with remote machines and not having a work unit cache would severely limit output. To my understanding, the only "issue" WCG has with ud mon is the worry that units could time out etc. But those familiar with the capabilities of their systems soon understand how big a cache is sensible. I only have enough for a day's work. Those with recent grid experience wil understand why we want a cache [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 30, 2005 2:41:57 PM] |

I keep several work units (with Udmon) on a usb drive and run them while I am at work....I do not have to load anything on the work computers as I save everything to the usb drive...

Vaio, try send/receive that work unit one more time and if it stalls again just delete it...I have not run into any problems over here yet but on the Grid that problem happened a few times...

Hi guru
When I manually closed and opened ud mon again...the slot was filled. I will just delete that unit and get a new one just to be on the safe side. Not a problem...just don't want to send bad data or waste time. Was just curious as to why it stalled. Just a connection glitch no doubt. |

Glitches do happen evry now and then...I think that WCG has a better handle on their servers and that the glitches will be few and far between....Also I think the only people who are using UdMon are on our team....As long as you start it using the batch file UdMon-wcg I forsee no problems...

I have been using udmon for a long long time and as has been said, as long as you start with -wcg, you should not see any problems. I certainly haven't.
However, I have seen the problem of a unit hanging during the receive phase on a machine that is permantly attached via DSL to the Internet. I had to kill UD.exe, remove the ud_xxxxxx files and start again. It would ask me if I was a new or existing user and all was OK again. |

Thanks.
As I said, not a big issue...was just raising awareness and seeing if anyone else had seen this lil issue. |
