Well, to begin with, I had problems when I first installed the UD device for WCG. The "paused" thingy. I solved it when I discovered that the DEP (Data Execution Prevention) was not reporting this as a problem. I manually added the "World Community Grid Agent" to the list and checked it as not to be disabled by DEP. I have the most current XP Pro with the lasted patches.
----------------------------------------Yet, I was "given" about 32 results without even crunching! This morning, I received a work unit named WCGrid_Rosetta.exe. The size was 7.401.742 megs with a time stamp dated 03/10/05. After an hour, it was at just 1-3% (I forgot). It appeared to be a 20 work unit. I thought "ok, big deal, a big work unit". Two hours later, I checked again, and the result was already turned in! The next work unit took less than 4 hours. I have been given credit for too many results, yet, too little points. Has anyone else experienced this/these problems? Thanks! |

Hi Johnny........I don't know about the latter issue....but I imagine the issue where you got 30+ results was when you were repeatedly trying to download a unit....but being blocked by DEP (Whatever that is).
Somehow it looks like each new attempted download credited a result. |

The DEP problem caused the agent to repeatedly crash and try again. When you finally got the first work unit, it included the Rosetta program code used to run it. This program is saved in the install directory so that the next time you get a work unit, it does not have to be downloaded again. Usual work unit data inputs are in the 0.5 to 1.0 MB range. The amount of time needed to process a work unit averages around 10 to 20 hours but can vary from just a couple hours to a couple hundred hours depending on the difficulty of the protein being processed. We cannot predict the amount of time needed for a given protein in advance so we end up with quite a range of times. However, we do have a formula which lets us get the average time in the range specified above (on an average computer).
