Re: cpu time/real time! What should I expect?

I did some more checking. For all of my 7 computers cpu time is around 82% of real time for the last 10 days. For the worst it is 70% of real time. That is for every 100 days I am running this computer I am losing 30 days in which the computer seems to be doing nothing. That is not acceptable.

Re: cpu time/real time! What should I expect?

I checked it again this morning. 12 hours of cpu time, 2 results and 5 results waiting to be reported. So the last two times I had 8 and 5 results waiting to be reported. Why are my work units taking so long to be reported?

Are you sure there isn't some program installed in all of your machines that is using a lot of CPU?

results are not reported until you request more work, or after 24 hours, with a min buffer of .1 you will have to be just about out of work to need more

Re: cpu time/real time! What should I expect?

Hi!

Try the following:

1) increase min and max work buffers to 4.0 and 7.0 days respectively
2) set CPU usage to 100% (ie use all 4 cores)
3) set system work before BOINC is interrupted to 0 - ie BOINC gets max system usage
4) check ubuntu for background daemons/tasks - kill anything not necessary. Look for any unusual tasks/activity. Yes, Linux IS virus-free, but it still can get "ZOMBIEd" (albeit rarely, to be fair)
5) set updates to manual/security only, and run the ubuntu update, then reboot
6) update BOINC client to latest stable (via BOINC site)

I know that this is obvious, but you say that you have been running this PC for 5 years? So it is at least 5 years old? check temperatures when running. If hot or the fans seem to work hard, switch off, buy a can of compressed air and give it a really good cleaning through. Check fans and heatsinks especially. I have given old PCs a speed boost of 35% by doing this - and I didn't realise it was overheating, either!!

Reboot, update linux manually, then re-run BOINC.

See what happens and let us know.

Another possibility is your memory. Run the MEMTEST program overnight from GRUB (on rebooting). If your RAM is failing (for whatever reason) then this may contribute to the problem.

Have fun!!

Re: cpu time/real time! What should I expect?

As for #1 I want my results to be reported shortly after they are completed so I changed those to .5 and .6. I figured that I would have more than a half a day of units and would report results after I fell below a half a day. #2 and #3 has been long time ago. #4 I do not know how to do. I know that task manager in windows will tell me that but I do not know about Ubuntu. #5 I always make sure it is up to date. #6 I will not update until it is in the software updater since I usually run that once a day. Firefox is regularly updated so what is wrong with Boinc? It is winter and the computer is in my unheated basement so it is not overheating. I did take a can of air to it and got very little dust. Again with #4 my benchmark on this computer is better than another computer that is doing much better.

Re: cpu time/real time! What should I expect?

The problem is with my Ubuntu computers. I checked them today and did an update on all of them. I found that I had over 40 results waiting to be reported. There is a difference between windows and Ubuntu. Windows has a field asking when to report with 0 meaning it is always online. Ubuntu has a field for minimum cache. I have one Ubuntu computer that when I look at task it shows me only the ones that are being worked on. There are no waiting to be reported or ready to start. But when I told it to update there were 26 work units reported.

Re: cpu time/real time! What should I expect?

On the Task tab in Boinc Manager, on the left side of the pane is section with the word "Commands" at the top. Under the word Commands should be a button that alternates between "Show active tasks" and "Show all tasks". One time I accidentally clicked that button when it said "Show active tasks" and it ony showed tasks that were running. If it says "Show all tasks" you should be able to click it and see everything.

Hope that helps.

Re: cpu time/real time! What should I expect?

Though some here recommend not using it, there is a cc_config.xml command to report work units immediately. Have you bothered looking into using one?
