Will the budget cuts draw more scientists to WCG and similar projects - should we be preparing?

Since it looks like the sequester budget cuts will go into effect and likely be at least quasi-permanent, isn't is likely that a lot of scientist who now rent computer time will be out of funds and will need the type of free resources we provide? Should we be preparing for that?

Re: Will the budget cuts draw more scientists to WCG and similar projects - should we be preparing?

Interesting question... when I think about it, I see two participants: the crunchers and IBM/WCG. I don't see much that crunchers can do that they aren't already doing (except going out and buying more crunching devices). That doesn't mean that there aren't things the the crunchers couldn't do... it just that I'm not seeing it. IBM/WCG on the other side could allocate more space, resources, etc, but probably won't do it until they have the the approval of the new projects.

What kind of preparation were you thinking of?

The sequester will not be good, but it will not be the catastrophe all the fear mongers are harping about. As the British would say " Keep a stiff upper lip and carry on."

Re: Will the budget cuts draw more scientists to WCG and similar projects - should we be preparing?

Yeah, sorry. I was being deliberately indirect. I meant WCG. You're right. There isn't much we can do as individuals without at least some guidance in terms of what might be coming down the pipeline.

And of course at this point, scientists are probably only starting to think of alternatives and may not even be aware of what is available to them in terms of distributed computing - as hard as that may be for some here to comprehend give how many projects some people are or have been involved in.

So it really falls to WCG to spread the word to researchers who might be in need of our services and are faced with budget cuts. Then there would be the proposal phase, then alphas, and then betas. And somewhere in there we could be informed of what is likely and maybe start to do something on our end.

Would hope WCG would be talking to the scientists to verify any issues and pass along that info to us crunchers. Wouldn't be a happy camper to wake up to a dried out machine and an email from WCG stating all projects are frozen until further notice. Hopefully we hear from the WCG staff soon about what will take place. Would guess only the US funded projects could possibly be affected. Lets hope for no interruptions.

Oh crap. That's a good point too. Not all of the work is digital I would imagine, so if funding gets cut, at least in the case of some projects, that could be catastrophic. I wonder if we could poll each of the research groups to get a sitrep (situation report).

[rant]What the liers in the White House aren't telling us is that this is not a budget cut. It is a cut to the increase in spending for the next fiscal year. They'll still be spending (aka wasting) more of of our tax dollars this year than the did last year. Budget cuts=BS fear mongering from the libitards.[/rant]

I've heard that argument too and I honestly don't know how that works. However I do know that they had someone on CNN yesterday from the NIH who was both an administrator and researcher and he said that even his own research programs could get cut as a result of the sequester. So unless you think all of these people are lying, this is going to mean a lot of job cuts and a real hit to R&D especially in the public sector.
