Since Sony is a major player here and with the specs of the PS4 , a pre-installed client on the new PS4 would be nice.
----------------------------------------![]() Edit: And I would like to offer my services as a beta tester. AMD talks about the PS4. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 4 times, last edit by BladeD at Feb 24, 2013 5:13:58 PM] |

That would be nice.
----------------------------------------With an 8 core CPU and a powerful GPU, I think it's worth the try. Maybe since the Sony Vaio laptops already have the WCG client pre-installed Sony won't be too picky about this. ![]() - AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W - AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W - AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz |

Why would Sony do differently to what they did to PS3, if you remember the story? For one, a gaming device not used for gaming does not sell what it's made for...

Why would Sony do differently to what they did to PS3, if you remember the story? For one, a gaming device not used for gaming does not sell what it's made for... Maybe because it's a new day! And Sony didn't know what WCG was. The PS3 was a closed system with unique parts. The PS4's parts are not unique and hopefully more opened. |

Well, part of that story I referred to was that GPUGrid ran on PS3, but who knows have they given up on that [exclusive] avenue, to include dis-allowing Linux on.
---------------------------------------- An old day excerpt from the GPUGrid wiki:Former support for PS3s Support for the PS3's Cell microprocessor and the subsequent PS3GRID project was dropped in 2009 due to updated firmware preventing the installation of required third party software. This included Linux distributions that are required to run BOINC. The massive throughput of Nvidia GPU's has also made the PS3 client largely redundant. As of September 2009, a mid-range Nvidia GPU ran GPUGRID applications approximately five times faster than the Cell microprocessor.[1] As one of the techs revealed, they're looking for *Easy* portability which Linux as platform would have been. Who knows could Android be squeezed onto the PS4, but it requires Sony facilitating this, or at least not blocking, without prior notice... not a platform one would bet the eggs on. But Folding@home was pre-installed on the PS3.

The Folding@home PS3 client was only discontinued in November 2012. Maybe they had an official partnership(with the app "Life") with Sony hence why they only dropped support for PS3 in November 2012 instead of 2009. Maybe PS4 will allow the installation of Linux and WCG could make a partnership with Sony.

Maybe it was F@H that had the exclusive, and worked to have GPUGrid/Linux chucked? [A distasteful rumor if it ever was one]. Vaguely remember lawsuits being lodged against Sony. Quick Google:
Folding@home PS3 FAQ Please note the PS3 client described in this FAQ has been retired as of November 6, 2012. Please see these links for more details. |

I've been looking for another distributed computing project for my PS3, but have found none.

Xbox 720 is supposed to be using AMD also. Only way to allow WCG to run on these closed systems is allot of user feed back or WCG staff contacting each one to pitch the benefits. The hack community will probably jail break it anyway to allow folks to install whatever. Since they are using common computer parts, haven't seen a computer that couldn't get hacked yet.
