Does anyone know if the Jaguar APU will have 8 real cores or 4 modules with 2 cores each? What makes 4 modules with 2 cores non-real? ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by BladeD at Feb 24, 2013 11:45:23 PM] |

Question I've seen in longer past, where 2 cores share one FPU, this maybe addressing that point: http://news.softpedia.com/news/AMD-s-Jaguar-C...FPUs-Doubled-288711.shtml

Cool. ![]() - AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W - AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W - AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz |

By real I meant independent cores, not modules with two cores each. ![]() - AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W - AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W - AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz |

Hmm, so it still uses modules as the Bulldozer/Piledriver CPU's but they are stronger. Cool. Jaguar doesn't share the FPU and decoders like Bulldozer. It only shares the L2 cache similar to Intel older Conroe/Penryn chips but between 4 cores. Sony estimates that the performance of the APU to be close to 2 teraflops. The total perform of WCG is currently 1300 teraflops, so just 700 PS4's would exceed the whole of WCG! I know that work units are processed multiple times and you are unlikely to achieve the theoretical performance of the chip but the potential gains from the PS4 would dramatically increase WCG performance. |

Considering the number of [international] cartels on many consumer product groups [anyone heard of the latest on the flat displays and monster penalties?], anything that is undermining/erode market will be stopped in it's tracks... the "block Linux on PS3 gambit" could have been one of those. It will though get to a point where, like that Belgian MRI specialist, someone will figure out how to get Linux on anyhow and run it's private SC system. The MRI specialist had his image analysis done in hours where before it took days. But, we need to emphasize, these are specialty computations and so far only HCC1 fitted that frame at WCG to achieve a many fold gain, so what is the realizable potential on the whole? Given this CPU is x86_64 even Windows could be hacked on, in VM maybe.
