The PC in question does not have a compatible GPU, and during startup, BOINC correctly reports that:
"No usable GPUs found" Work gets done, some tasks complete, but often, I get "GPUs have become unusable; disabling tasks" and then the task restarts. Why, if I have no usable GPUs, does a task die because it becomes unusable? How do I get around this problem? Thanks! |

Hello ulibruzek,
This is a unique report of a problem. I can only guess that you have ordered BOINC to use your GPUs in BOINC Manager - Advanced - Preferences establishing an override preference file. Try resetting your local preference file to No GPU use, then hit CLEAR. Lawrence |

My experience with W8-64 and allowing GPU computing while computer is in use is a constant display driver crashing **, so set it to only GPU compute when device is not in use [default], with a 5 minute delay.
Very likely you see improved GPU handling when you move to the v7 client, latest *operational* stable I have is 7.0.47 with a 7.0.52 just out for OSX, Windows, Linux AND Android [This build has a major work fetch bug fix discovered in the last few days, resulting in resource starvation... no work for a CPU or GPU]. The Windows 64 bit release: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.0.52_windows_x86_64.exe and 32 bits: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.0.52_windows_intelx86.exe (which is seemingly needed in the OP posters case) ** W7/W8 recover from display driver crashes, borking the tasks, but XP does not... requires a device boot. |

Hi ulibruzek,
There have been recent posts about occasional problems with BOINC GPU code and Windows XP. (I get real tentative, using passive voice, when I start talking about things I am uncertain of.) If there is anything in a setting in your preferences that might check for GPUs, try to turn it off. If that does not work, try avoiding the HCC project and see if that helps. Lawrence |

I upgraded to 7.0.52 (x86) and so far, so good. Up to 52% so far - before I kept stalling at 6 or 7%. Two questions though:
1. Where did the message tab go in BOINC Manager? 2. I used to be able to hover over the tray icon to see progress, but that doesn't seem to work anymore. Any way to get that back? Thanks for all the help! Wayne |

Hello ulibruzek,
1. Where did the message tab go in BOINC Manager? The Event Log has it all. 2. I used to be able to hover over the tray icon to see progress, but that doesn't seem to work anymore. Any way to get that back? No. My answers are not authoritative. Sekerob keeps up with BOINC version 7 and will tell you if I am wrong.Lawrence |

Message tab was discontinued >>> move to using BOINCTasks 3rd party util to get it back if you like [superior to the standard BM http://www.efmer.eu/boinc/boinc_tasks/manual_settings.html ]. The replacement "Event log" window can be opened from the BOINC Manager > Advanced menu. This way you can have both the running tasks and the message log in one view.
The Systray v7 only shows running task numbers. On some systems like mine [W7-64], not even that... only getting 2 lines telling that Computing and or network is enabled/disabled/snoozed/suspended. BOINCTasks shows the number of running tasks per resource/connected device, but can have a configurable balloon window that shows all running tasks, CPU time and progress [though latter I've not seen since the last few releases when hovering over the systray icon of BT]. |

Event log (equivalent to Messages) is reached from the 'Advanced' tab (shortcut CTRL+SHIFT+E)

Is there an advanced "tab" in addition to the "advanced" menu ? Kindly thanks, the available shortcuts are listed on the menus, but long having stopped the use of the BM in daily use, only look in when someone asks where it is.
