How to Suspend Processing?

How do I suspend processing and then restart it?

I understand how to pause it but apparently it restarts automatically in 60 minutes.

I have a backup operation that takes all night and as far as I can tell WCG processing is only suspended when there's interactive (keyboard or mouse, etc.) input happening. I've been removing it in Task Manager but this requires I reboot to restart.

In the FAQ it says I can click Suspend on the "Simple" screen. Here's what I think is the simple screen and I can't find a Suspend on it.

Re: How to Suspend Processing?

Hello i_am_jim,
Click on Advanced View, then click on Projects at the top. Select World Community Grid, then click on Suspend to the left. BOINC will stay suspended until you select WCG in the Projects Tab and click on Resume. Even rebooting will not un-Suspend so remember to Resume the next morning.

Re: How to Suspend Processing?

If the object is to suspend all BOINC processing, not only WCG, than the "all suspend" is activated from the Activity menu. Select "Suspend". This is indefinitely until you reverse to Run Always or Run based on preferences!

If you like to automate BOINC suspending when your backup runs, determine the exact program mask as shown in the Task Manager for the backup program and add a line to the <options> section of the cc_config.xml e.g.

<exclusive_app>mybackupprogram.exe<exclusive_app>

When BOINC detects the program is loaded it stops and will resume when the system scheduler unloads the backup program again. Never will that be forgotten.

Re: How to Suspend Processing?

Oops, forgot to post the link to the cc_config.xml manual: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Cc_config.xml.

If the file not already exists, the base content would be, to include a line for the backup program:
<cc_config>
<log_flags>
<task>1</task>
<file_xfer>1</file_xfer>
<sched_ops>1</sched_ops>
</log_flags>
<options>
<exclusive_app>mybackupprogram.exe<exclusive_app>
</options>
</cc_config>
File to be placed in the BOINC data directory, where path is printed at beginning of start up messages/event log. In Windows 7/8/Vista that would be C:\ProgramData\BOINC as default. The folder could be hidden, so the address has to be typed in the file explorer location bar to get there.
