Changing your Member Name

Hi,

I want to add an Astrix '*' after my member name.

In the WCG project members list I do see members with a * after their name.

When I try to do this from 'My Profile' page I enter archeye* and can use the "Is this name available?" function (which reports yes).

When I do a save there is an error message reporting an invalid character.

After talking with others it seems when you create the project account you can use non-literal characters as part of the name and this is accepted.

Please can you change the rename code for existing account holders to accept non-literal characters in the same way as for when an account is first created.

Regards,

archeye*

Re: Changing your Member Name

Your member name can contain alphanumeric characters (A-Z, 0-9), and !, -, _, and spaces. (Note - it does NOT say there can be an '*'

I want to add an Astrix '*' after my member name.

The correct name for this symbol is "asterisk."

Re: Changing your Member Name

Thanks Scribe for the link.

I read that it does not say a '*' is valid but I quickly browse the member list on BOINC stats and here are 3 example WCG member names including a *

ich_eben*
sdl*
hhibrit*

There is no need to try to be funny.. :p
archeye asked a valid question. And if WCG is a serious project,
I would like to think there are some serious and sensible people in
here that will and can reply in a sensible way too. wink

and the rules have changed since those members started

This is Not correct! It has been like this for as long as I have been around.
Those team members started after me.

Here is the case:
When you create a New account, one can use an asterisk, but if this
is not done at once, and you try to change it later, it tells that its not
valid and cant be used. Since its accepted in the creation setting, there is no reason
this cant be changed to also include the edit settings.
The question has been asked before.. and actually - until now - it has
never been replied to in a proper way. And as I can see here, this
just continues.

Is there an administrator reading this, who can act as one? cool
Then please tell why this is such a problem to change, when it
obviousy is already included in the settings for Making an account.

Thank you. rose

Re: Changing your Member Name

Hi AriZonaMoon*,

This is indeed an inconsistency bug. [just created a test account with * at end from which I'm now replying] The set of permitted characters have indeed changed at some point to comply with BOINC WW rules and to deal with e.g. some real esoteric characters that would not properly code on this system [changing member name would require removing these for a successful save]. The admin will read this and pass it to the web-developer, I'm sure.

SekeRob* = SekeRob... CA is the title!

Hi AriZonaMoon*,

Just tested and posted to see this * behavior in member names and was notified of SekeRob* "Your post has been created successfully. Please do not submit again. This post will be moderated so please wait for the forum moderator to approve your post." Whenever the moderator gets to it you'll see my [serious] reply. I'm a forum spammer you know ;D
