Although it's not really an issue at this point and may not ever become one - depending on how things progress with gpu projects - I was wondering if there was any interest in discussing ways to recognize the contribution of people in terms of total run time.
----------------------------------------If there are more GPU projects in the future and it seems likely that there will be, it may be important to recognize the contribution of people in ways other than points and badges. People who have no interest in spending money on high end GPU's will be at a distinct disadvantage and obviously it's not that difficult to top out on the badge of a given project with even a 4 core machine - something that is increasingly common these days. So maybe some thought should be given to a way of recognizing total run time, independent of project. It could be something as simple as one symbol for each decade and then maybe another each 50 or 100 years. Or it could be something a little more elaborate. This would be easy to implement since we already track total run time and it would just be a matter of adding a couple more graphics to a person's avatar. Thoughts, comments? ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at Dec 20, 2012 2:36:46 AM] |

I suppose if it is really that important to you you could ask SNURK to modify your signature to make the font for number of hours on your signature bar really big, make it a really bright color and make it blink.
----------------------------------------Don't be offended or take this too seriously, I am trying to make a joke. Cheers

I hope people realize that I'm not asking for myself - you HAVE looked at my stats - right?
----------------------------------------edit: btw, I was fully aware of what was in my sig when I posted. I was really hoping people would give me a little more credit than that. Apparently not. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at Dec 21, 2012 7:50:38 PM] |

I think people don't realize that you weren't asking for yourself. Looking at your stats only reinforces a reason for your request. So, GPU's aren't the only thing they see there. I see 125 years of run time.
----------------------------------------I don't think a single run time tally is a bad idea. However, the forums seem to already just accept the sig from SNURK as acceptable. Some want more badges to reflect multiple years but I see that failing as progression with hardware advances. I still like badges for each project but would rather have a simple indicator of total years in each. People can do the math if they want the total if we had those. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Coleslaw at Dec 21, 2012 8:09:36 PM] |

Thank you Coleslaw. I don't care if people disagree with me, the only thing that irritates me is undeserved snarkiness. But if my intentions were unclear, then perhaps I should have made them clear from the outset. I thought my sig did that but perhaps those just get screened out after awhile.
----------------------------------------My concern is with people who aren't rabidly competitive but who nonetheless follow boincstats or other rankings and like to see themselves progressing over time. The GPU project puts a big kink in things for those folks and I think some have already become discouraged. Personally I would like to see a report from the staff on long time members who have simply dropped out since the GPU project has started and compare that to the normal attrition rate to see if this is even something worth worrying about. Maybe it's not. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at Dec 21, 2012 8:27:07 PM] |

The people that run BOINC for points/runtime as a rule don't crunch at WCG because they can rack up the points/runtime looking for prime numbers or cracking passwords. If running the GPU app has discouraged some because of lost runtime then they were here for the wrong reasons in the first place IMHO. Many users here could easily move their GPU resources to other projects and rack up 10x the credits they get here but for me it's personal. It's all about doing something that will benefit mankind, especially finding cancer cures.
----------------------------------------I also believe many people are leaving all of BOINC these days for financial reasons. It's just getting too expensive and when you have to cut back, "hobbies," like crunching are usually one the first things to go. I will be cutting back when summer returns because my electric bill is no longer affordable. The rates keep going up but my salary doesn't. I received a letter from my power company this week saying I was #1 in my neighborhood for power comsumption. Wonder why? Next thing I'm waiting for is a knock on the door. ![]()

This side of the pond, if you're highest in the neighborhood, the police visits to see if you're running a canabis plantage in basement. Would that not be a fantastic front... crunch in the basement [to show why], and have a plantage in the attic to fund the basement activities
(Sorry, dont do anything though which is illegal in your state or country). |

Unproudly making us the nr. one in europe.. ![]() |
