I'm looking to upgrade from a i7 4-Core processor to an AMD 8-Core processor.
----------------------------------------AMD FX-8320 FX-Series Eight-Core Processor Edition http://www.amazon.com/AMD-FX-Series-Eight-Cor...8-4&keywords=amd+fx+8 Is anyone using this or a similar processor and to what success? Is the AMD 8-Core really twice as good at WCG crunching as an Intel 4-Core? I'm assuming WCG supports an 8-Core processor. Yes? I'm would want to run the 8-Core 7/24. Thanks for the feedback.... ![]() ![]() O/S -LinuxMint 64-bit, Release 13 (maya). DE: Cinnamon |

Hello Gandalf_PCHF,
Here is a comparison: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+FX-8320+Eight-Core The AMD FX 8320 is a good value and beats many i7 CPUs on performance per dollar. It does not beat many of the high-priced i7 CPUs on performance. BOINC can easily run 8 and 16-core CPUs. Lawrence |

Don't forget you need a new motherboard

I think I've found at least part of my answer...
----------------------------------------http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Bulldozer/AMD-FX-Series%20FX-8320.html The number of cores 8 The number of threads 8 I was hoping it would have 16 threads. I know it was to good to be true. ![]() ![]() O/S -LinuxMint 64-bit, Release 13 (maya). DE: Cinnamon |

The value of AMD 8320 is very good, but in longer term crunching perspective it is slightly diminishing: i7-3770 TDP is 77W while AMD 8320 is 125W.

Its not really any better than a 4 core intel, especially if the intel has HT. Both will do 8 threads at once. Just don't get sucked into the core count game. Architecture is just as important.

Yeah, but for the same money on ebay, you can get an engineering sample of an E5-2687W. I don't know how the 6376's will bench, but compare it's predecessor, the 6176, to the E5's in this chart . The difference is striking. And don't get me wrong. I'm an AMD fanboy from way back. I still support the company. But damn . . .

I've been an AMD supporter since the 486s
----------------------------------------I just bought 4 computers (I've built them since the 1980s, have 2 sheds full of parts,. but bought these for relatives living a 5 hour drive away so HP and Dell can do their Support ![]() 2 are AMD FX-8350 processor (I have both AMDs running at 4.2 GHz stable) 1 is Intel 3rd gen i7-3770 1 is Intel 3rd gen i7-3770K At first all 4 computers had ati/amd HD 7570 with 1 GB GDDR3 Ram 600-650 mhz clock 800 mhz ram PCIE 2.1 video cards the 2 AMD motherboards only support PCIe version 2, the Intel boards support PCIe version 3 I got a couple (One at 880 MHz GPU and 1125 MHz Ram, other with 800 MHz GPU and 1125 MHz RAM) Both are AMD HD 7750 PCIe version 3 with 1 GB GDDR5 Ram video cards and put one in a AMD PCIe 2.0 computer and one in an Intel PCIe 3.0 computer Findings: The AMD computers with the 7570 Video cards average 275 watts at the wall, turn in an average of 130 results a day The Intel computers with the 7570 Video cards average 175 watts at the wall, turn in an average of 140 results a day (A LOT LESS ELECTRICITY USED- and less heat) The AMD computers with the 7750 Video cards average 295 watts at the wall, turn in an average of 250 results a day The Intel computers with the 7750 Video cards average 195 watts at the wall, turn in an average of 320 results a day (A LOT LESS ELECTRICITY USED- and less heat that's my results the two AMD computers are going to be Christmas gifts to an uncle and cousin who run BOINC for here on computers I built long ago which turn in a result a day now. but use the same electricity as the intels do turning in 320 results a day .. --------------------- Findings on 1-7-3770 3.4 GHz vs 3770K 3.5 Ghz ($200 more for the K version ) According to cpu-z the 3770 is running at 3695 MHz the 3770K I overclocked with a 42 multiplier and it's running at 4,189 MHz On the slower 3770 I overclocked the 7750 video card ( gigabyte overclocked to 880 MHz,I oc'd to 885 MHz and ... If I had it to do over again ... I"d build intel 3rd gen 1-7 3770 (locked but $200 cheaper only 20 or so results a day difference) AMD 7750 or better video card (more than makes up 100 or more results per day) ----------------------------------------------------------- Windows 8 issue I had trouble on one Windows 8 computer where BOINC refused to autostart startup after a restart reboot putting in Startup folders did not remedy the issue FIXED: to solve problem I opened task scheduler (not task manager, not msconfig, not startup folders) Create a task on startup or at logon ... have it run Boincmgr I spent two weeks and was about to format and reinstall Windows 8 ,... but that task scheduler fixes the not auto starting startup issue in Windows 8... so I'm happy now Welcome back AS_Angel_Pat Registered Member Since: 6/11/05
of all my computers, best producers
