Transfers stuck - "Upload: suspended - user request"?

Hi.

I've searched for some mention of this issue without success.
Application: BOINC Manager 7.0.28 (x86); wxWidgets 2.8.10

I now have 23 items sitting in the Transfers window with status: Upload: suspended- user request

I select them all and hit the Retry Now button to receive the message: "Network activity is suspended - user request. You can enable it using the Activity menu"

The network item in Activity menu is set to "Network activity always available"

I've tried un/suspending at project and task level, I've switched the network settings through all three states, rebooted the machine.
All to no avail, these items are refusing to be dislodged.
Any assistance would be gratefully received

Hello gman-mannet,
If you are still on Windows XP, I am uncertain why you are no longer running BOINC 6.10.58. Anyway, I am not running BOINC 7 yet so I do not know the equivalent of Advanced - Preferences - Network Usage. In any event, CLEAR should remove any unusual preferences that you have set. There are several different spots that let a user interfere with network activity. You have to check them all.

No tasks are suspended.

I found my way to an updated BOINC client via the BOINC site. The Preferences item is now under Tools.

The installer didn't kretch and the app seems to run fine; I think it has uploaded some items. Perhaps I should revert to 6.10.58?

Shouldn't need to revert to 6.10.58.

  • Stop the boinc client. (check Task Manager to be sure it is stopped.)
  • Navigate to the Data Directory and make a backup copy of client_state.xml in another folder on your PC. (Just to be safe, since editing the file can cause problems if not done properly)
  • Edit the client_state.xml file with Notepad, scroll all the way to the bottom and see if <user_network_request> is set to 3. If so, change it to 1 and save the file (Don't use Save As.. because that might change the xml extension to txt)
  • Start the boinc client, and see if the uploads work.

Re: Transfers stuck - "Upload: suspended - user request"?

Too Late, Bobcat. It looks like I borked it. My bad.

I reinstalled/repaired 6.10.58 and the work items no longer appear in the Tasks window. Status is "Scheduler request pending, Requested by user"

I'm hoping that means at some point I'll download some more work units.

There's 308MB of stuff in the BOINC data folder, can that be retrieved?

7.0.28 offers some additional functionality; in particular, applications can be named ("exclusive applications") which will then stop BOINC tasks executing while they are running. That makes it Very Appealing Indeed. I'm not so sure that was a good idea now sad

Aargh! It looks like exclusive apps have to be placed in cc_config in the WCG version of BOINC Manager. Is that the case?

Re: Transfers stuck - "Upload: suspended - user request"?

hmmm, well anyone *downgrading* from 7 to 6 will loose all work. Pity of your 23 completed items to upload.

Either 6 or 7, exclusive_app is always in cc_config.xml. 7 just has an interface [extra tab on computing preferences] to enter those. I've just checked, the interface writes them to cc_config.xml <options> section. I use it on Linux for apt-get and synaptic as when they run some sciences have the tendency to be starved of cycles and crash [CEP2 e.g.], that is on my old machine.

Presume you had the network option in the Activity menu set to "always available" (which is the setting that changes the 3 to a 1 in the client_state.xml). The last case where the interface was not setting this correctly was in yonder days.

edit: oh, and having any <exclusive_app> loaded will suspend crunching and network, as you will have found out ;>)
