Re: Low Work for Help Conquer Cancer ( Nov 20, 2012 )

There used to be another utility people used the same way but I'll be damned if I can remember the name. Anyway, they changed something in BOINC, it didn't work or didn't work properly any more and lots of folks were not just bummed but had headless rigs such that I think they relied on it. I could never figure it out so I was spared that particular frustration.

That said, I guess as long as I have cheap KVM's and old LCD monitors that I can go to as a backup, there's really no harm in using something like that if it's idiot proof and not too hard to set up. I'm sure you still remember how much fun we had trying to herd me to the correct BOINC directory for the app_info file (crap, why am I reminding people). d oh

BOINCView... the developer disappeared into the Canadian Prairie [last trace I've read], some 3-4 years ago.

Yes, thank you - that was it precisely!!!

But I doubt that story. What I've heard is that there's a developer protection program similar to WitSec although I don't really really understand why developers would need to be protected from cute, harmless crunchers like us.

Mea Culpa, Mea Maxima Maxima Culpa... the 124 days ETC was truly messed up blushing blushing . The cumulative images completed was right, but the recent average I forgot to set to be multiplied by 2 too. It's now 65 days [on what we knew]. With 100-130 days knreed estimated at start and now 40 days into GPU crunching, that makes 65 about the low end number remaining. [Sadly Jack Jones of Dad's Army recently died, else it would be "No Panic Mr Mainwaring "]

(Now I go hiding for a while, well really got errands to run ;)

Sorry, we don't have an "official" estimate of how much more work there will be yet. The researchers are still trying to figure this out themselves.

Re: Low Work for Help Conquer Cancer ( Nov 20, 2012 )

I know my ramblings about sticking units are OT, but since I started them here and nobody objected, here's my update...

First of all, I can't get any of the suggestions to give me joy so had to look more in depth. On one machine, I fixed the problem by removing the third GPU. It is a 5770 and was perhaps drawing too much through the mobo (no power connectors fron PSU). Since doing that, fingers crossed, the 700W PSU has manged to feed the other two GPUs.

On the other machine with a 1100W PSU, I had so many sticking units that I switched to GPU and CPU processing and now have no problems. I know that I have lost a lot of potential for GPU processing, but at least I am now getting days of processing rather than hours (with almost as many hours of sticking) and I can have a real life rather than being a virtual shepherd.

I now have another 1100W PSU and case and am going to take another rig and fit it in there giving me the potential to turn that 'new' machine into a GPU cruncher. True there'll be another few days or virtual shepherding, but I am hoping that I will ,at very least, be able to reintroduce the HD 5770 to use.

twilyth, I understand what you are saying about relying on non-BT backed utilities, but have to agree with others that BT is so dependable and useful, ignoring it is a bit like saying to the inventor of the wheel that you're not interested because one day it might break and there might be nobody interested in repairing it.

Honestly, I moved away from KVMs when I discovered BT and if I need to anything on the headless machines, I can use Remote Desktop Connection from anywhere (so no need for KVMs, keyboards, mice or monitors)

I've been using TeamViewer on my remote machines. They will run well with no monitor installed but they somehow still use the graphics adapter when you log in.

With TeamViewer and a usb wireless dongel, I can put them almost anywhere there is a plug in. I've got one the the master bath that my wife thinks is a space heater. :)
