I have been thinking about adding an XFX 7870 as a 2nd card to my workstation for HCC, which currently has a GTX 570. The 7870 would not be connected to any displays. I am running the supported BOINC version 6.10.58.
-----------------------------------------Will BOINC detect and send work correctly to both cards? -Are there other issues I would need to be concerned about with mixing cards from the 2 different vendors? I have read posts where mixed cards were used however 1 card was excluded. This system needs to be stable. Any insight is appreciated.

Don't know, but think BOINC default only uses the most capable card without making setting adjustments in the cc_config.xml [manual ]. You also can force through the cc_config.xml which card is not used, so you still have full display performance if that is required. Mixing NVidia [not so OpenCL capable] and ATI [much more OpenCL capable], latter would be the card to do GPU computing on.

What BOINC version? [Should have noted that the capabilities of the client GPU handling/detection have changed over time]

Hi Paul
----------------------------------------You didn’t specify the OS you are running. I can only speak to Nvidia and Windows. If you have two identical Nvidia cards (whether or not bridged for SLI) BOINC will use both cards without modification. If you have two different cards (say 570 & 670) you will have to enter a line of code to use both (it’s been posted many times and you can search for it). Otherwise it will use only the best card. I have never heard of anyone using both a Nvidia and ATI but that is not to say someone has come up with weird code. From a Windows perspective, I suspect it cannot load/run two different vid drivers but I have never tried to do so. Suggest you re-examine your reasons for trying to do this as it could cause problems outside of BOINC. Cheers. EDIT: See Rob's post below for use_all_gpus syntax. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Dataman at Nov 18, 2012 4:50:43 PM] |

Was referring to this config line:
----------------------------------------<use_all_gpus>0|1</use_all_gpus> If 1, use all GPUs (otherwise only the most capable ones are used). New in 6.6.25 Not at all sure if that is hard coded default ** now equal 1, and zero will return the setting to most capable. ** regrettably many of the config options do not specify in the wiki what the default setting is [as in, when absent, then n]. Edit: Maybe in other light [how ambiguous can one define an instruction], another wiki [BFS] says "If set, use GPUs even if they're not equivalent to the most capable one." This infers, if equal capable, both will be used. Sigh. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 18, 2012 4:48:09 PM] |

I am running Windows 7 64 bit.
----------------------------------------If this will cause stability issues than I will not mix. This system is used for real work and is not solely dedicated to WCG.

You can use both ATI and nVidia in the same rig, however I have not done so. I have only read posts at other projects of people doing it. I think most who do are running two BOINC clients at the same time. From what I have read, it is a big pain in the rear. You would be better off putting the second card into a second computer if you have that option.

6.10.58 Running any version 6 on this app is asking for trouble IMHO. Upgrade to version 7.0.36 And for those of you that are using a version 6 with no issues, I'll tip my hat. I'll just add that during the beta testing any version 6 had by far the most errors, invalids and other issues. 7 versions are coded to better run GPU apps. Running ATI and Nvidia together on the same machine might work but it's probably not worth the effort. The drivers seem to not play nice with each other.
