confused WCG is worldwide, Why not "Global" or "International" as a Geographical Choice?

Many people choose to "belong" or participate in the world as a member of the world and not restrict/label themselves or those they associate with to one geographic location.

Equally, others may not wish to label themselves or their team members with that of a government they may disagree or oppose.

For this reason and others I would like to suggest that "Global", "International", or "Earth" be added as an acceptable geographic location.

"Americas","Europe","Asia",etc may also seem appropriate. My team, or at least my teams image should not be limited by one members location.

Until then, my team will remain open to members of all nations and bear the Geographic location of "None Selected".

Just a thought.

Re: WCG is worldwide, Why not "Global" or "International" as a Geographical Choice?

I do fully agree to this proposal. I would add the following list of continents name + Earth:

Asia
Africa
North America
South America
Europe
Antartica
Earth

Australia is a special case indeed as a continent but also as a state so is already covered.

I am sure that with about 42 permanent bases in Antartica, with big ones like McMurdo, Amundsen Scott etc.. there could be some contributors. wink

I do not like much "Global" or "International" as these terms are not geographical, a little fuzzy in their meaning or political.

"Australia & Oceania" is quite elegant name for the continent peace

Re: WCG is worldwide, Why not "Global" or "International" as a Geographical Choice?

Right now, when looking in the Geographical regions chart, all those not electing a country [which roll into the regions, more expansive to include ME, MA] show as a big number hovering over the Indian Ocean. WCG actually has detail internal stats based on traffic origins, so could in fact divide these "non selected" into their respective areas. Appropriate to publish that? Don't think so. It's up to the member to show where s/he feels to belong to.

(Never looked until now what country that big IBM account rolls into [none in fact], and noted that another big player actually removed the country info... they are global players).

Re: WCG is worldwide, Why not "Global" or "International" as a Geographical Choice?

We have made a conscious decision to leave the Country field optional so that each member can decide whether or not they're comfortable specifying their country. The location is not intended to restrict or discourage who can join which team, but more as a way for us to show the geographic diversity (even within each region) and truly global nature of the WCG members.

I see no problem with this approach. Why not add the continents + Earth as an additional possibility.

I second the motion. Continents + 'Earth' is not only clearer and more attune to the ideas associated with a 'map', but also to do away with the surrogate term 'Anonymous' as that term has a negative undercurrent associated with it.
