I have a problem running hcc1 GPU jobs. The 2 PC's I use for this have lots of power and some idle time but when in use, the graphichs cards must be reserved for their intended use. To accomodate this requirement, I have enabled the "use GPU only when PC is idle" option in the relevant device profile.
It works fine. Each time GPU computing starts, one of the ongoing CPU jobs are suspended to enable the CPU+GPU setup to work ringht away. That is sensible behaviour. The problem is that when the PC goes back in use, BOINC starts a new job rather then restarting the suspended one. As a result I generate 5-6 suspende jobs on each machine, which will never restart unless I deplete the job buffer. Is there a way to force BOINC to give first priority to restarting suspended jobs, rather than starting new ones? If it is relevant: BOINC 6.10.58 from WCG on Win7 64 bit with quad core and high end Nvidia cards. No special changes to standard settings apart from setting preferences. Thanks for any help and insights on this. |

1. Why are you posting in the Fight Childhood Cancer forum?
2. Upgrade to the Boinc version 7.0.28 as this does not seem to happen on my version ![]() |

This not resuming an already started task left "waiting to run" and ever more sitting there [gobbling memory with LAIM on for CPU tasks] is not a novel report. Probably reserving a core would overcome that bug, or upgrade... As for the 7 client... .28 is already 10 point releases behind .38. It's not perfect yet, but it's getting close to having a "good". Think there will be a few more releases to come, to fix some issues, to include for W8 installation. [Explicitly, installs should be done under a local account if wanting to do GPUing, never under a Microsoft (live) Account or you'll be observing the baffling loss of work each time logging out, booting or hot swapping user, AND the creation of a new device each time... I got a near dozen more now :(]. The service install is fine, but then there's no GPU crunching under Windows above XP.

Just to report back. I did the upgrade to 7.0.28, which was painless. It works as I would expect: CPU work on one of the cores is suspended when the machine is idle and GPU processing starts. The suspended job is resumed whenever the macjhine is used or when one of the other cores finishes its CPU job. Just perfect.
Many tanks for the tip. |

Hello Zigfried,
Here is the link to the BOINC download page if you want to try a version 7.0.28 for your GPU: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php Lawrence |
