Any issues when adding a 2nd AMD GPU?

Ok, I'm pumped at the AMD GPU for Crunching. It's a nice addition for my GTX570's. Let's me efficiently run non-CUDA choices. My one 7870 double D is outproducing 4 GTX cards with HCC1.
Retired my GTX 465 and 460 to give this card a spot with a system.
On to the question in title....
Am wanting to buy another XFX R7870 Double D. Can I run a 7870 also from XFX with same spec but 1050 VS 1000 (currently running) and 1250 vs 1200 respectively? My current card has OC's set at 1050/1250 and has been problem free.
I'm currently running 12 instances at 6 ish min per. Will adding a 2nd card drop the time per like running 6 on my current one does when I run 6 each?
Anybody tried 12 each (24) on an I7 hexcore?
Can a 7870 run with a 7950? And is the 7950 worth the extra 50-70$

Re: Any issues when adding a 2nd AMD GPU?

I doubt that you will have any actual incompatibility problems; I have run two HD 7770s together on HCC1 without any problems, though the cards were identical. I doubt that a factory overclock will matter, but it would probably be a little safer to run two 7870s than to mix one with a 7950. Sometimes when mixing Nvidia cards on Folding they obtain the performance of the lower-level card (i.e., with the fewest shaders), though I don't know if that applies to AMD or not in the case of HCC1.

But it is not clear whether you will be running both of them with the GTX 570 on the same motherboard. My HD 7770 is now running HCC1 with a GTX 560 (on Folding@home) without any problems, so it should be possible with double 7870 cards also. The main problem with mixing cards, as you may know, is getting a clean install of the drivers, especially after removing an older card. Be sure to remove the drivers for all the cards from the Control Panel (not the Device Manager), reboot, and then run Driver Sweeper (the new Driver Fusion is even better) before installing the new drivers.

Re: Any issues when adding a 2nd AMD GPU?

TY for the input.
The AMDs will be together on a 980X build. The 570's are on a 990X @4.4 build 570's GpuGrid (600-700K/day) and remaining threads GFAM for WCG.
Wish I could get confirmation on the 7950 as the 7870s ore off sale at the Egg. I'm gonna see if the 980X can do 24 instances at .5 avg/max setting in app_info.
Also, what did you do to get the NV and AMD to run in the same rig? I still have a GTX465 that would be worth running.
BTW, that one 7870 @12 instances is doing better than 80K. My 2X570,gtx465, and GTX460 were only doing 50K ish.
Driver sweeper works with W7 now? I'll check out Driver fusion also. Which driver did you install 1st?

At the moment, I just use my Nvidia card for Folding, and don't have to do anything except exclude it from BOINC entirely with a cc_config.xml file placed in the BOINC data folder.
<cc_config>
<options>
<ignore_nvidia_dev>0</ignore_nvidia_dev>
</options>
</cc_config>
But you want them both for HCC1. I have done that with an older version of BOINC, and I think it may have taken an app_info to get both used, since BOINC used to pick up only the faster card. However, with the current versions of BOINC (7.0.36 is very good), I think they are both picked up automatically, though I am sure someone here can answer that if you post the question.

Yes, this is definitely a project where AMD shines, particularly the 7000 series; in fact, the only one I know of where it clearly outpaces Nvidia.

It works fine with Win7 64-bit for me; Driver Fusion will pick up a few more registry entries, but that may not be necessary. I don't think it matters which goes first, but I usually do the display card first if you are using one (using the internal graphics for display would be better though to eliminate lag).

Re: Any issues when adding a 2nd AMD GPU?

TY again Jim,
I was thinking 465 for GpuGrid as NV is much more efficient with CUDA based projects. I'll keep this info for if I want to try for 3rd card.
Or I could get rid of them (460 and 465) to a cruncher/folder. Have to wait and see when other card arrives.

Re: Any issues when adding a 2nd AMD GPU?

I just added a second 7870 to one of my rigs and the spacing is too tight to put the cards in neighboring slots for xfire. I did do it but one card can't breathe.

Since I don't care about xfire for anything but boinc and since right now 7.0.28 only seems to be picking up one card, what should I do?

I have the avg_ncpu parm set to 1 and count set to .08333 (12 threads total)

Re: Any issues when adding a 2nd AMD GPU?

Sorry to double post.

I did some research and added the cc_config.xml file to the program data directory but it didn't have any effect. It only had 5 lines cc_config open, close. Options open, close. And the use all gpu 1 parm.

Do I need to have a <log flags></log flags> line too?

edit: BTW, despite having the count set to .08333 I'm only getting 9 threads.

In the log file it definitely sees both gpus. I'll post the file if anyone wants it.

Re: Any issues when adding a 2nd AMD GPU?

Hello twilyth,
Looking at the cc_config.xml page at https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Cc_config.xml I see:
<use_all_gpus>0|1</use_all_gpus>
If 1, use all GPUs (otherwise only the most capable ones are used). List-add.pngNew in 6.6.25

I think you will need to set this flag to 1.

Lawrence

Added: Duh.. I did not notice that you were using this flag.

Re: Any issues when adding a 2nd AMD GPU?

Thanks LH. It will be a moot issue by Tues. anyway I hope. I'll upgrade that machine to an 8350 on a test bench case with an ASUS crosshair V forumla Z m/b so I will be able to arrange the cards so as to jumper them. That will resolve the problem as it has with the dual 7950 cards.

But that's more than 2 and a half days man. Two and a half days of half-power crunching! You feel me? crying crying crying
