[Resolved] Issue with ATI Gigabyte HD 7970

I have taken away an Nvidia board and replaced it with a Gigabyte HD 7970 board. I installed it with latest catalyst drivers taken on the AMD website.
Then I made a clean install of the 6.10.58 version of WCG-Boinc and run.
The rig is Windows 7 with an Intel 980X CPU.
HCC ATI GPU task are loaded but they immediately stop with a computation error message. They all error out immediately.
With the Nvidia board there was no problem. Performance was not stellar but the GPU tasks would run without error.

Is there anything I should check or some parameter to change. The board is running at default factory speed. There is no overclocking.
It is a little disappointing to have such a high performance board just idle.

Could you post some error-messages from the event-log in BOINC? My HD7770 was working ok until I just ran into a 'Computation Error ' message a few minutes ago.

Here is a typical error log

Re: Issue with ATI Gigabyte HD 7970

I've seen many, many wingman errors that came from 6.10.58.
I'd recommend getting at least 7.0.28 from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php.

edit: I'd also recommend getting the beta driver version at the bottom of the amd/ati download page.

Re: Issue with ATI Gigabyte HD 7970

Thanks piroque. I have also seen in the forums to install the latest APP AMD SDK package. The latest version is 2.7

So I have now a few options to try. Let's see. Unfortunately I have reached my daily quota of errors and aborts I assume. Fo the moment I get 0 GPU tasks.

Tomorrow will be a better day. smile

Re: Issue with ATI Gigabyte HD 7970

I don't think you'll need the SDK if you install the beta I mentioned.

Re: Issue with ATI Gigabyte HD 7970

Btw, you could always move the card to a different PC that hasn't hit its quota. whistling

Install boinc version 7.0.36. Uninstall the old version before installing the new.n
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=6698&sort=5#45639

Uninstall whatever driver you're currently using and use driver sweeper to clean out all the stuff the uninstall left behind.

Install ATL driver version 12.11beta4. If this is only a dedicated cruncher I recommend using the custom install option and install only the video driver and the APP SDK runtime. Nothing else is needed or necessary.

Download and install MSI AfterBurner to do any tweaking to the card. My biggest recommendation in this area is to down clock the memory clock speed by 50%. It will save you power and produce way less heat.

Re: Issue with ATI Gigabyte HD 7970

Okay. Issue resolved.
Installed the latest Boinc version, the latest ATI beta drivers and the latest APP AMD SDK. Now all works perfectly.
Maybe the SDK is not necessary but as it works like this I will make no further change.

It is necessary. Without the SDK your card will not run the tasks.
