Re: GPU Optimisations

@Bearcat- No, that will not work for GPU only. That app_info is for GPU and CPU HCC tasks. Below is what you need for GPU tasks only. Make sure your profile @ WCG for this cruncher is set to receive no CPU tasks.

<app_info>
<app>
<name>hcc1</name>
<user_friendly_name>Help Conquer Cancer</user_friendly_name>
</app>
<file_info>
<name>wcg_hcc1_img_6.56_windows_intelx86__ati_hcc1</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<file_info>
<name>hcckernel.cl.6.56</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<app_version>
<app_name>hcc1</app_name>
<version_num>656</version_num>
<platform>windows_intelx86</platform>
<plan_class>ati_hcc1</plan_class>
<avg_ncpus>1.0</avg_ncpus>
<max_ncpus>1.0</max_ncpus>
<coproc>
<type>ATI</type>
<count>.25</count>
</coproc>
<file_ref>
<file_name>wcg_hcc1_img_6.56_windows_intelx86__ati_hcc1</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
<file_ref>
<file_name>hcckernel.cl.6.56</file_name>
<open_name>hcckernel.cl</open_name>
</file_ref>
</app_version>
</app_info>

To change the amount of tasks you want to run simultaneously change the <count>.25</count> parameter. .25 is for 4 tasks. .50 is for 2. .33 is for 3.

Got this from nanoprobe. Use this and you will get just GPU.

Re: GPU Optimisations

Hi Bearcat;
thank you very much for your help.
It works fine as GPU only with 4 tasks.
I will wait for one or two days and compare with the performance of last week. If necessary, I will adjust the number of GPU tasks as appropriate.

It would be fine to modify the recommendation on Xtreme forum in order to avoid loosing a lot of time by searching, rebooting, restarting, etc.

By the way: many thanks to Nanoprobe as well.
Cheers,
Yves

Re: GPU Optimisations

Am curious how your card does. Could you post your crunching times when it settles down? Glad to have passed along nanoprobes work.

Re: GPU Optimisations

The combination 1 GPU task - 3 CPU tasks does not require app_info.xml.
The parameter about GPU is not in client.xml but in app_info.xml.
For this reason I created the app_info.xml based on the example provided by http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthrea...09-Working-app_info-files
After aborting all the WUs, stopping and restarting boinc, it claims that anonymous platform is not supported.
Yves

The highlighted section of your post is the issue. You need tasks in your cache before adding the app_info for it to work.

Re: GPU Optimisations

He is using a Q6600 quad core. With him doing 4 GPU now, don't think he would have room for cpu. But since you mentioned the cache, are you crunching both? If so, any time added to GPU wu's crunching time? Wasn't sure if I should enable hyperthreading and add cpu wu's or leave it as is crunching 8. Making over 500,000 ppd now.

No I'm not doing both. To be honest I don't understand why anyone would run HCC GPU and CPU tasks at the same time. Now if you want to run HCC GPU tasks and another CPU project at the same time that's another story. I have run some HCC GPU and SN2S CPU tasks at the same time just to see how it effects performance. I'm all GPU for now.

As to the area of your post I highlighted, no I would not add HCC CPU tasks. I would ask why are you running 8 tasks with HT off?

Re: GPU Optimisations

My 7870 is in my 12 core/24 threaded cruncher. Since I'm only using 8, no need to burn the extra electricity. When my 7950 arrives, will enable hyperthreading to crunch 12 GPU wu's.

Re: GPU Optimisations

Hi Guys,
it is very disappointing and frustrating.
After the "seem-to-be successful" implementation of app_info.xml based on Bercat/Nanoprobe input, the host computed all the tasks but failed at the end by reporting them; bringing again the "anonymous" message.
Finally, I removed the app_info.xml file and I started again to run 3 CPU + 1 GPU simultaneously confused

Cheers,
Yves
---
PS: Just for information, based on boinctask, the CPU was only loaded to 20% with 4 GPU tasks running simultaneously. At the same time, the 4 GPU tasks seemed to be a little bit too much for the GPU, maybe 2 GPU + 2 CPU would be the best compromise.
