avatars add some personality to the customization process, more that icons that are mean't to express the feeling at a particular moment in time - a little bit of character, a feel for the person and a perfect mask for all thouse who would like to be someone else.

I'll sign up for them, even though I donot posess one hahahaha

Re: No avatars

The code that this forum is run on mvnforum does support avatars at the release we are running (RC3). Obviously the Admins have decided to not enable this functionality (it is optional).

We also have to remember that there may still be people on dial up who will be impacted by the use of avatars.

There is another two releases (RC3 Update 1 and RC4) of the forum software. RC4 brings Personal Messages (PMs) which could be cool but we have to wait to see if/when it gets implemented. The forum has been very stable, so why mess with it.

Re: No avatars

I vote for avatars too... makes it easier to see who is posting if you do a fast scroll down some threads like I do.

As for dial-up users, some forums restrict avvies to a certain size - another forum I am on will not permit avatars larger than 80x80pixels and 6k in size.

There are no complaints there and they have over 45,000 registered users.

(bet you can't guess where I'm talking about pwrguru biggrin )

Re: No avatars

Avatars would have a minimal hit on page loading etc....I think.....I don't have a great understanding of all that stuff.
The ones at grid for example are only 80 x 80 max and 4 kb max.
This could more than be compensated for by changing the system so that sigs can be turned on and off.
Doesn't seem right having a sig for your team displayed when visiting/posting in another teams' thread.
Sig enable/disable would be easy to implement.
The avatars would give the forum a friendly face........nicer to see who has posted by looking at their avatar than just names.

Just my tuppence worth.

edit.ha gordoma wrote as i proof read.

Oh and yes.....it is 6kb and not 4kb as I incorrectly stated.

...especially for those people who's usernames are similar because they've named themselves after a popular sony laptop branding...

Re: No avatars

Perhaps this is just the way to do it until Avatars come into use... I might put mine in my sig I think?
