Hey comp_interriz
I am one of the biggest culprits - and the first to admit it! You made an interesting statement, that has got me thinking: so that conversation is eaiesr and quicker to follow I never though of the forum as a media to converse, as conversation means interaction amongst specific people within a given time frame. A forum on the other hand is visited by various people - who pop in and out at various times and do not necessarily respond to every single part of the information flow. Please treat this as an observation and not any form of assesment or critisism. I use communicators and chats to "converse" on the net, so it pretty interesting from a socialogical point of view that a forum is perceived as a conversation. Anyone else have some thoughts on this? |

I guess that most of the newer members are use to avatars from all the other forums that they visit....And yes, there are conversations going on all the time....Just pop into JTS2 recruiting thread anytime and you will understand better....

Just a quick response on the question of Avatars.
The avatars are not enabled becuase they would not work properly with the way the forums is currently written (or any of the updates that are available for this package). The problem stems from the fact the forums are running on more then one server. If we enabled avatars and a user upload their avatar it would only be stored on one server. Thus if another user had been load balanced to a different server, they would not see the avatar. There are many ways to deal with this but as in all software projects it is a question of priority. Currently, I spend my time working on work for the changes to support the linux agent. After that is completed and running we will examine the other items on our (long) to-do list. For example, enabling Avatars is lower priority then giving members the ability to merge devices. However, this discussion has raised the priority of avatars as it appears it is something that a number of users would like. knreed |

appreciate your feedback knreed.
Linux is much more important as it will bring real value to the project. Avatars are a secondary item as they are not a "must have" and only enchance the forum and not the data processing. There will of course be a feww people who stay with us or join because of the avatars, however it is my personal belief, that the linux agent will bring more benefit to the main goal of the grid. btw - please make sure that that there is a good pilot testing ground with selected users for the linux version to ensure testing the linux agnet on linux experts and to avoid beta testing on "green users" .... don't want the UD effect to repeat itself here. |
