Hi!
I've been running GPU works on my HD6950 1gb (Note that I have 2 monitor plugged), and when it starts working, when I move windows, it's really slow. I've tried to find a way to get the GPU usage to under 30%, but can't find any options. Also, I've tried to let the computer work only when idling, in BOINC, nada, doesn't work. ANyone have this issue? It would be nice to have more computer over the GPU, like idling only GPU when computer is in use :) Thanks ![]() |

In BOINC do you have the "Run GPU Always" under the Activity menu selected?

![]() Sounds like this needs somebody with a lot of GPU experience. That leaves me out. I think that if your problem is slow CPU, you need to help by explaining your system, reassuring people that you are keeping your temperatures under control so that you are not getting a forced system clock slowdown, and explaining just what BOINC settings you are using. Your question is clear, but the general environment needs a lot of specifics. Lawrence |

I had the same problem with a GTX 580 on an I7-860! I think it's just that the work unit uses 99-100% of your video card's bandwidth so your operating system has to take a back seat.
Hoping now that we've got an official launch of GPU WU's it will be all good |

I can think of one hardware-based solution.
For crunchers looking to build/buy a new system, I suggest getting a CPU with an integrated GPU (let's call these an 'iCPU'). Intel's IvyBridge or AMD's A10 are the latest of these iCPU chips. One can hook up the monitor to the motherboard (to tap into the graphics capability of the iCPU) to free the discrete GPU-card to crunch GPU-based WUs. The crunching experience is expected to be better than relying on the discrete GPU-card to do both the rendering of the UI-visuals and the crunching of GPU-based WUs. ; |

That is a nice idea man :D
I don't know how intel HD are for GPU compute, for Maybe those AMD one could be nice. |

Great idea. How do you tell boinc to crunch with one particular GPU since both will be recognized?

Bearcat, it apparently requires version 7 of BOINC and some cc_config.xml trickery. This is the FAQ comment:
If you have more than one graphics card, can you limit which graphics card is used? Yes. In order to do this, you have to use the <exclude_gpu> tag in the cc_config.xml file and be using the latest version of the BOINC client from Berkeley. This is outlined here . Please note that this is only possible with version 7.0 of the BOINC client and higher. |
