(GPU+PC cost) vs (cores+mhz) comparison of 1 to 8 GPU computers

With GPU support in this project I can link to the comparisons I have done of Nvidia GPUs including the cost of the rest of the system, not just the cost of the gpu(s). The original post is in gpugrid.net forum ( http://www.gpugrid.net/forum_thread.php?id=3148 )
The prices are in Norwegian Kroners, but the trend is clear, its better to stack several high-end cards in one system with a good enough motherboard if you buy an entire PC for crunching (2x, 3x or 4x 690, 2x, 3x or 4x 660Ti, 2x, 3x or 4x 680, from first to last in bang for your dollar). However this can change slightly with prices of PC hardware, though it will probably stay as a good rule of thumb to require only one motherboard for several GPUs if you want to get your moneys worth.

Price per core incl. PC, price per core/mhz incl pc, gpus and last computer config (see next list).

Did not use all the computer configurations I listed, but kept them in for causal continuity (the perfectionist in me would have to rename the configurations then).

And here is the long-version list which includes prices I used for the GPUs etc.

PS: As far as I know only 4 gpus are supported in for example Windows 7, so any more than that would have to be linux family OS. And I do not know if any motherboards support more than 8 GPUs.

PPS: I call on someone else to do the mathematics for the AMD GPUs, and I welcome other computer configurations and even GPU configurations that give different results, if other configurations give the same results please post that as well.

PPPS: I'm currently on my 18th hour awake so please let me know if something in this post doesn't make sense so I can edit or explain.

Re: (GPU+PC cost) vs (cores+mhz) comparison of 1 to 8 GPU computers

As a side note, I chose not to take power usage into account in my comparison due to me living in a cold place where 95% of the year require heating. The ovens are on temperature controlled setting and automatically turn off more often when CPUs and GPUs convert electricity to heat and medical research, and so my heating bill is barely touched as long as I keep the crunching hardware in heated parts of the building.

Re: (GPU+PC cost) vs (cores+mhz) comparison of 1 to 8 GPU computers

I came to the conclusion awhile ago it would be cheaper using GPU to crunch with provided you live in an area where electricity isn't astronomically priced. The newest cards seem to be more power efficient but OCing them may negate this. A cheap quad core and 3 or 4 GPU's would be less than a dual hex system and allot of ram. Hopefully WCG will add more projects to GPU crunching.

If you spend a large fraction of the year cooling your house, not heating it, then crunching computers increase the power usage much, but if you live in a cold place, or only crunch during the cold parts of the year, then it does not add much (in ideal conditions, almost zero), to the power usage. If you could have GPUs (they can take 70-80 degrees Celsius easily) heating the water in your water-heater you could crunch year round in any climate with close to no increase in power usage. Overclocking GPUs could be a cheap way to create enough heat from your crunching computers for you to heat the majority of the building from medical researching computers, instead of hot copper wires or pipes that have no further output.

And yes, the point you hit on the nail, running more microchips on less motherboard, RAM, harddrives etc, will become more and more efficient as you add microchips, especially GPUs as it turns out.
