BOINCStats shows a very seriously reduced number of users

Disturbed to see that since I last checked the WCG page at BOINCStats, the number of active crunchers has dropped from around 95,000 to about 82,000.

We have ahd more projects with more variety, so I do not understand this, unless we lost some huge crunching farms.

Finishing and "finishing" some of green and kids projects might caused it. Also realizing WCG is "paying" much less than other projects might turn some shrubbers off the grid :-(. Sad...

That part is sad. It doesn't effect me as the only BOINC project I do is WCG..
To me as long as all are on a fair playing field this whole thing we do works.
This is something the project developers need to fix together and set standards so the issue of "paying" is a non issue.
Speaking of "fair" can someone tell me why someone with a E5-2670 be attaining a RAC of 24,000 Boinc PPD while I'm running a much faster E5-2687W with a RAC that looks to max at 18,500-20,000?
I know the answer, he is on LINUX and I am on Win7-64..
NOT a fair playing field IMHO unless LINUX allows you to do that much more work..
I would love to hear some comments on this.
Thanks

A drop always happens during the summer in the northern hemisphere, due to some users shutting-down for cooling-purposes while others is away on holidays and so on, so the drop in itself is expected.

The increase in the fall on the other hand seems to be lower than normal this year. It's not just WCG having a problem increasing participation again, other DC-projects seems to have similar problems.

Re: BOINCStats shows a very seriously reduced number of users

Yes, Movieman, I agree with you. But. I can not shrub SN2S, GFAM and DSFL on my Mac (lot of invalid results). I will not be able to shrub HCC on my Mac's GPU. Dedicating my resources to local projects such CFSW is also not the name of the game (at least for me) - I really do not care if such project is running or if it finished. Etc, etc....

Marketing of WCG and each of its project is, unfortunately, poor. I can not find anything useful about them as a base to write a blog and to try to bring new people here. People who will join the Grid and stay for years to come.

Because WCG is paying lees than other projects, we can not expect newcomers seeking lot of credits. We need strong(er) marketing matrerials, so we can persuade other to start shrubbing this projects. Regardless on OS they are running.

Cheers and NI!

What, pray tell, is "shrubbing"? That is a new one on me.

Re: BOINCStats shows a very seriously reduced number of users

I honestly think the numbers will improve when more projects on the Grid turn to GPU's.

I mean think about Milkyway@home, GPUGRID, PrimeGrid, almost everyone crunching those projects have GPU's because of the limited supply of projects that accept them.

I have two identical systems - P4 1.6ghz - with one on LInux and the other on Win XP. For a while they have both run HCC exclusively. The Linux system averages about an hour less per WU, so the Linux system is doing more work in less time. I would suspect given the high end systems you are using and with which you are comparing, the difference might be more exaggerated. It may be a different comparison with Win 7 and other flavors of Linux.

Cheers

Re: BOINCStats shows a very seriously reduced number of users

The problem goes way beyond points or just poor advertising. Most projects do a really poor job at responding to users within their own forums. And when they do, it isn't always welcoming. We get spoiled with what response we get here. Throw into the mix that all of the BOINC projects are pulling mostly from the same pool of users and resources, makes it rather simple to push some users away. We have quite a lot of negativity and resiliency even here about adopting new technology and ideas. (coming from the community as a whole rather then just singling out techs or advisors) Compound that with factors like single person operations and lack of international corporation funding and you have even tougher times with pleasing users. Then you have companies trying to support BOINC like SONY attempted but don't do a very good job promoting what it is. A lot of users get upset when they feel duped into running software they know nothing about. (Yes I know how SONY asked people if they would like to run it or not. This is not a debate against or for their practice.) I know it is also really easy for new contributors to quit since they never really see results. Sure they may have some paper that gets referenced that they MIGHT be able to read, but lets face it...those get read and understood be a very small percentage of donors. Last, one must consider that not all systems were built equally and tend to require a higher grasp on computers to truly keep up on things. Most people I know don't care to put that much time into it.
